AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE #14 EN-
TITLED "AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING, AMPLI-
FYING AND REVISING THE BUILDING CODE;
CREATING AND CONTINUING THE OFFICE OF
BUILDING INSPECTOR; VALIDATING ALL PER-
MITS ISSUED AND CONSTRUCTION AUTHORIZED
UNDER THE CODE HERETOFORE EXISTING AND
REPEALING RESOLUTIONS, ORDINANCES OR
PARTS THEREOF INCONSISTENT HEREWITH."
THE TOWN BOARD OF THE TOWN OF NEW CANADA DOES ORDAIN:
Section 1. Section 6-96 of Ordinance #14 is hereby amended to
read as follows:
116-96 I.A. The following methods of wiring, and no other me-
thods, listed in the National Electric Code and installed in accord-
ance therewith, are allowed:
(1) a. Basements are required to be wired in rigid metal
conduit, if protected from corrosion by approved
method other than enameling.
b. Circuit for water heaters, pumps, and furnaces are
required to be wired in rigid metal conduit, if
protected from corrosion by approved mthod other
than enameling.
(2) Electrical metallic tubing
(3) Surface metal raceways
(4) Flexible metal conduit, except for service entrance,
is allowed.
a. One or more switched exterior lighting outlets.
Bedroom, finished recreation area, living room,
dining room area: Convenience outlets shall be
placed so that no point of usable wall space is
more than 61 from an outlet. Lighting may be
by means of wall, ceiling, valance, cove or por-
table lamps. If portable lamps are used, at
least one convenience outlet shall be wall
switched. Means of lighting shall be wall
switched at latch side of doors. Kitchen, bath-
room and basement appliance receptacles shall be
of the three wire type and shall be installed
for use of polarized 3 -prong plug. Laundry area:
one ceiling light over tub. One polarized -three
prong laundry receptacle be provided on a separ-
ate 20 ampere circuit. Basement: one ceiling

light for each 150 square feet. One basement
light, located at foot of stairs, and wall -
switched at head of stairs. Porches, breezeways,
garage, carport, etc; Minimum of one wall switch
light and convenience outlets every 201 of wall
area.
(5) Armored cable, if concealed in completed buildings ex-
cept for service entrances.
(6) Open wiring, bare conductor feeders or non-metallic
water proof wiring where conduit is impractical may
be used with special permission from the Electrical
Inspector.
(7) Underfloor and cellular metal floor raceways, if re-
ceptacle housing and junction boxes are covered
with non-conductive material or grounded.
(8) Wireways
(9) Busways
(10) Underplaster extensions, except single conductor types.
(11) Wiring for electric discharge lighting systems in ac-
cordance with Sections 4.198 and 6031 of National
Electric Code.
B. Minor alterations or extensions which do not require addi-
tional circuits in single family dwellings or duplexes may be in-
stalled by using the existing wiring methods in such buildings.
C. Material and devices of the classes for which the Underwri-
ters Laboratories, Inc., provide approval service, shall bear the
Underwriters approval, or shall be approved by the Electrical In -
Spector.
2.A. The master electrician or others as provided for under Sec-
tion 8 shall have the public or private electric utility providing
service designate the location of the service on new or remodeled ser-
vice installations.
B. The main service conductors for single dwelling or duplex
residential buildings, having a gross floor area of 10001 or more,
including basement, (but excluding porches, breezeways) shall consist
of a minimum of 2-2AWG 8 1 #4 conductors, or equivalent with at least

100 ampere carrying capacity. The service panel shall be of 100 am-
pere capacity and shall la ve provisions for a. minimum of one fifty am-
pere 220 volt range circuit, two additional thirty ampere 220 volt
circuits, and one fifty ampere fused cutout or circuit breaker which
will supply at least eight single pole branch circuits.
C. Wires other than service wires shall riot be run through the
service conduit or meter connection box.
3.A. Service disconnect, meter or cabinet containing fuses or
circuit breakers shall not be installed in unfinished attic, bathroom,
clothes closet, bedroom, stairs, coal bin, or wash rack, except by
special permission of the Electrical Inspector.
B. Service disconnects, distribution cabinets, meters, and other
special apparatus shall be installed in a safe and accessible location.
There shall be an unobstructed floor area not less than three (3) feet
wide in front of such equipment. This space shall be free of grounded
equipment such as pipes, machines or tanks.
C. In residences, the service disconnect and/or meter shall be
installed in the basement, in the garage, or outside, except by special
permission of the Electrical Inspector. Outside meters shall not be
installed in
the front of the residence.
D. Where
service is supplied by the public electric utility;
(1)
That utility shall supply meter connection boxes or
sockets and/or instrument transformers and meters.
The meter connection box socket and/or ;nstrument
transformers shall be installed by the Master Elec-
trician, except for primary metering.
(2)
If a meter connection box or socket is supplied, it
shall be installed on the line side of the service
disconnect. Switchboard meter installations do
not require a connection box or socket.
(3)
If instrument transformers are supplied, they shall
be installed on the load side of the service dis-
connect except for those installations having more

than one service disconnect. If more than one
service disconnect is installed, the instrument
transformers shall be located on the line side
of the service disconnects and shall have mount-
ings approved by the Electrical Inspector. In-
strument transformers and mountings shall be en-
closed in a cabinet having a sealable screw cover
which shall be supplied by the piaster Electrician,
except on switchboard installations.
(4) The top of the connection box or socket for meters
shall be placed from four to six feet from the
floor or ground, except by special permission from
the Electrical Inspector.
E. In buildings having multiple occupancy, the service discon-
nects and the meter connection boxes or sockets shall be marked by
the piaster Electrician to designate the number or location of the
area served.
4. Section 2452 and 2453 of the 1947 National- Code recommending
the type "S" fuse shall be mandatory.
5. Circuits for ranges shall consist of a minimum of two No. 6
and No. 8 copper wire or equal.
6. Circuits for sub -feeders shall have a minimum size No. 10
copper wire or equal.
7. Multi -wire branch circuits are allowed only where the build-
ing is served by a similar multi -wire service.
8. Exit lights shall be installed in accordance with the require-
ments of the National Fire Protection Association Building Exit Code.
