City of Maplewood 2 May 2010 By Councilmember John Nephew A Retreat To Move Forward On a Friday in early February, the City Council and the management The purpose of the retreat was threefold: to set council direction and goals for the next 2-3 years, identify short-term priorities, and build trust and better ways of working between staff and council. We started by reviewing the city’s assets and obstacles. Maplewood Councilmembers Nephew and Llanas, Mayor Rossbach, has a strong history, treasured parks and preserves, high quality Councilmembers Wasiluk and Junemann services, dedicated staff, a robust business community, and an advantageous location within the Metro area. The city also faces Goal Number 2 - Good Government and unfunded mandates from higher levels of government. Make Maplewood city government transparent and accessible; steps to restore trust and respect between the citizens, staff and produced a list of goals for discussion. We came to an agreement on what to prioritize. The following emerged as our top seven, as recorded by the retreat facilitator: Goal Number 3 - Parks and Recreation Department Re-establish a Parks and Recreation Department using input from Goal Number 1 - Restore Reputation of Maplewood citizen surveys; revitalize leadership, establish new direction, Re-establish Maplewood’s reputation as an attractive, viable program determination/stabilization, and possible joint venture with neighboring communities. leadership with professional and dedicated staff. Goal Number 4 (tie) - Environmental Planning Further develop processes for “going green,” sustainability. Goal Number 5 (tie) - Fiscal Responsibility eye to providing stability and maximum value in the long term for our citizens. Goal Number 6 - Infrastructure Complete infrastructure upgrades. Goal Number 7 - Redevelopment Plan Create and commit to a redevelopment plan for the city through prioritizing and updating the Master Plan. At our April 12th meeting, the Maplewood City Council formally adopted these goals by a unanimous vote. assistance from the state has declined, the demand for services, have to balance the need to limit the growth of property taxes, with the need to make the investments in our community that will bring greater prosperity and stability for all in the long term. Identifying these shared goals is an essential step toward better governance in our city.
