HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-10--08 delete duplicateApproved. ` q /,, MAPLEWOOD CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MINUTES July 10, 2008 The July 10, 2008 meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. Members Present: Marlene Palkovich, Chair Lisa Liddell, Secretary Steve Gunn Others Present: Chief David Thomalla Commission Liaison Terrie Rameaux City Attorney Alan Kantrud Approval of Minutes Commissioner Liddell made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 4, 2008 meeting. Commissioner Gun seconded the motion. Ayes: 3, Nays: 0. Motion carried. Chair Palkovich requested that the Commission table any further discussion of the open meeting law until the time comes that the commission needs to address it. Discuss and Approve Police Officer Hiring Process/Postin Chief Thomalla suggested there be no change in the hiring process. Staff is proposing to create a new list of qualified candidates using the same process as used in the past. Chief Thomalla stated the current list of candidates is exhausted and there is a current vacancy for a police officer and by the time a new list is created, it is foreseen there will be two openings. There was some discussion regarding the exam components. Chief Thomalla stated that he believes the weighting of the exam components has worked well for the past couple recruitment processes. There was also discussion regarding the importance of police officers' writing skills. Motion made to approve the Police Officer Hiring Process and Posting. Ayes: 3, Nays: 0. Motion carried. Other Chief Thomalla stated Lieutenant Kevin Rabbett has announced his retirement, which will take effect August 7`h, 2008. Chief Thomalla requested that a lieutenant replacement search be done at the same time as the police officer search. Chief Thomalla went over the procedures of a lieutenant search, which includes a practical exam—an in -basket exercise, and the oral interview. The position would be posted as an internal promotional position. Posted to the public only if there are no internal candidates. Adiourn Commissioner Gunn made a motion to adjourn the meeting.
