The City of Maplewood. You see this phase or title all the time, but have you given any thought to what it really means? Webster defines "city" as 1. a large or important town, 2. an incorporated municipality, usually governed by a mayor and a board of aldermen or councilmen. The term "city" is really more of a legal term. It defines Maplewood as an entity, which due to state and federal law, exists as part of a larger legal system that indicates the type of government and scope of authority in the eyes of the law. Although that legal definition is necessary, it falls well short of giving a person any idea of what goes on here. I would like to have you think instead of the Community of Maplewood. Webster has this to say about community: 1. a unified body of individuals, 2. people with common interests living in a particular area, 3. an interacting population of various types of individuals (my favorite). If I had been asked to define "city" my definition would have been much more along the line of a community. The issues the council deals with are community issues for the most part. We certainly have common interests, and have to interact with each other daily. This interaction is what determines whether we will be a successful city (community). Recently I have been involved with a task force that has explored wood smoke and how it should be dealt with in Maplewood. There are many people who like to have recreational fires. There are also people who have health or nuisance concerns when wood smoke drifts in their homes or yards. Our differences could be loud noise, bright lights, barking dogs, trashy yards, dirt, dust, vibration, you name it. Maplewood and the State attempt to regulate, through laws and codes, a system for members of a community to get along with each other. I was a little disappointed in some people's reaction to this latest effort to work on a community solution for wood smoke. There was quite an effort to misinform people, for example, through flyers that implied that we were planning on banning fires. A senior member of the community wrote a letter to the editor with false information, which further misrepresented the issue. I find this reaction to be odd. If people voice legitimate concerns on an issue my normal reaction is to try to help find a solution. In this case, on a personal level, I considered why I have backyard fires and determined I could do without. So, I removed my fire pit. But that might not be what works for you. The point is that we all have to live here. If we are to do so successfully, we must continually be willing to consider the needs of our neighbors along with our own and be willing to work to find ways that promote the common good.
