CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Board of Adjustments and Appeals of Maplewood, Minnesota, was held in the Council Chambers, Municipal Building, and was called to order at 8:07 P.M. by Chairman Wiegert.. B. ROLL CALL Donald J. Wiegert, Chairman Present Norman G. Anderson Present John C. Greavu Present Burton A. Murdock Absent Earl L. Nelson Present C. APPROVAL OF MINUTES None. D. PUBLIC HEARINGS 1. Sign Variance - Gladstone Community Center - 7:45 P.M. a. Chairman Wiegert convened the meeting for a public hearing regarding a request of the Gladstone Community Center for a variance to erect a 26.4 square foot ground sign,approval of a two foot height variance and a variance to the maximum number of signs permitted. The Clerk stated the hearing notice was in order and noted the dates of publication. b. Manager Evans presented the staff report. c. Director of Community Development Olson presented the following Community Design Reveiw Board recommendation: Chairman Hunt moved the Board recommend approval of the three variances on the basis that: 1. The variance would be in keeping with the spirit and intent of the ordinances; 2. The sign ordinance does not recognize the need for special signage for schools or community centers in an R -1 district; 3. The proposed sign would be attractive in appearance and would be compatible with the surrounding properties. Approval of the sign is subject to the following conditions: 1. The horizontal sign board shall only identify the rental agencies within the building. There shall be no advertising or additional messages permitted. - 1 - 12/20 2. Owner and applicant agree to the above conditions in writing. Board Member Phillippi seconded Ayes all. d. Chairman Wiegert called for persons who wished to be heard for or against the proposal. The following person voiced his opinion: Mr. Robert Anderson, 1912 Manton Street. e. Chairman Wiegert closed the public hearing. f. Mayor Greavu moved to appr Community Center subject to th Design Review Board reports. Seconded by Councilman Nelson. E.
