C. PUBLIC HEARINGS
2. Sign Height Variance - St. Paul Priory (Northwest corner of Larpenteur and
Century Avenues) 8:00 P.M.
a. Acting Chairman Axdahl convened the meeting for a public hearing regarding
a petition filed by the St. Paul Priory to erect a 40 foot free standing sign
at the northwest corner of Larpenteur and Century Avenues. The Manager read
the notice of hearing along with the dates of publication.
b. Manager Miller stated the applicants proposeto erect a free standing cross
40 feet in height at a point 121 feet from Larpenteur Avenue, 118 feet from
Century Avenue and 144 feet from the intersection of those streets. The Village
Code requires that no sign shall be over 25 feet in height above the ground.
For this reason the applicants are requesting a variance from this section of
the Code. If the requested variance is granted, the proposal should be then
referred to the Community Design Review Board for architectural review.
It is felt that the proposed structure will not result in any site obstruction
due to its lack of bulk and its distance from intersecting streets. These
factors in combination with the fact that the sign is completely noncommercial
in nature leads me to recommend that the proposed variance be granted.
