City of Maplewood Public Extant Historical Property Map Suggestions
This list is broken down first by key characteristic of Maplewood history, and then includes three
standard categories that contribute to the character of any village, town, or city. There were 3 goals
for the list to help narrow down the final picks:
1) To cross-reference and support the 60 Stories of Maplewood already on the city website,
and to provide supplemental examples to help tie into the timeline currently being
developed by the HPC.
2) To include Locally Designated, NRHP Listed, and NRHP Eligible structures within the city
(references some but not all of the properties recommended eligible in the 2014 historic
context study).
3) To highlight the growing cultural diversity of Maplewood's heritage and historical locations
significant specifically to Maplewood's immigrant and non -white population.

Designation Forms:
E. LOCAL DESIGNATION FORMS
Heritage preservation commissions generally use locally developed designation forms to
designate properties at the local level. Guidance for designation work is found in the Manual
for Archaeological Projects in Minnesota, in SHPO's Historic and Architectural Survey Manual
and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines.
The following information must be included in the application narratives:
1. The number of designation forms to be completed.
2. The type of designation forms (individual, district, thematic).
3. The number of contributing properties included in the designation forms (see National
Register Bulletin 14).
4. The names of the properties to be documented including general statements about their
significance.
5. Reference to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Registration sufficient to
demonstrate that the project will conform to these standards.
6. The expected schedule for designation.
7. Discussion of how the project relates to the state's comprehensive planning process and the
2022-2032 statewide preservation plan. Simply citing the part of the plan to which the project
relates is not sufficient.

board member of the Maplewood Area Historical Society from 2017-2018. He was also a consultant on
the Gladstone Neighborhood Master Plan from 2012-2013 and was the Assistant City Manager from

history.
Sandra A Dicke
BIOGRAPHY
Sandra Dicke has a lifelong commitment to Maplewood and its history, and has participated with the Maplewood Area Historical
Society for more than 25 years. She has served a number of volunteer roles, including grant writer for improvements of farm
structures, wedding coordinator, and event planner for teas and other programs. She is a Lifetime Member and has served on the
Board of Directors for over 10 years.
Sandy's interest in the Maplewood community, education and the environment comes from her parents, who were both members of
the Maplewood City Council. Her father Mike served on the local school board. Her mother Char was a founding member and
president of the Maplewood Area Historical Society and volunteered at events at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm for decades.
Before her retirement, Sandy's career at the Minnesota House of Representatives spanned more than 36 years in a variety of roles.
She retired as Chief Sergeant at Arms, only the second woman in the state's history to hold this office.
Before working for the Minnesota House of Representatives, Sandy taught in the North St Paul -Maplewood and White Bear Lake
school districts.
Sandy graduated from the University of Wisconsin River Falls (UWRF) in 1968 with a Bachelors of Science degree, majoring in both
Elementary Education and Physical Education. She currently serves on the UWRF Foundation Board and previously served on the
UWRF Alumni Advisory Board.
Sandy attended North St Paul High School, where she participated in the symphony and marching band. She belonged to the Shop
Pond Speed Skating Club at Lake Como and was City Champ in 1962-63.
Sandy was born in New Canada Township, which became the Village of Maplewood in 1957 and the City of Maplewood in 1974.
She attended the original Gladstone Elementary School in 1950 and halfway through that year, her first grade class moved to the
new Gladstone School, still in use on Frost and Manton, in Maplewood.
Sandy continues to live in Maplewood, and her daughter's family and grandchildren live across the street in Sandy's childhood
home. She continues to support environmental improvements in the City of Maplewood.
Additional points of interest regarding my volunteer work for Maplewood.
My main focus was membership in the Maplewood Area Historical Society. I am a life -time member. I
served on the Board of Directors of MAHS for over 10 years.
I facilitated the first legislative meeting with MAHS and the MN House of Representatives to promote
our grant proposal for remodel/renovation of the Bruentrup Heritage Farm after it had been moved to
its current site by the Save the Farm Committee.
The result of our work was the first $100,000 grant from the State of MN to MAHS for
remodel/renovation of the Bruentrup Heritage Farm. I worked to facilitate meetings between the MN
Historical Society with MAHS members to comply with the required historical significance of
construction plans.
I worked with Bill Bruentrup, Geo Rossback on the paperwork needed to facilitate the pass- through of
state Grant money to Maplewood and then on to MAHS for the second $150,000 grant. The paperwork
on this grant was extensive! We hd much consultation again on this grant with MN Historical Society to
maintain the historical significance of any construction at the site.
I worked as one of the first volunteer wedding coordinator for MAHS at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm.
Duties include:
Developing contracts for the wedding venue.
Worked with City staff on guidelines.
Collecting fees for the rentals.
Met with potential rental customers. (sometimes in blizzards of January!)
Prepared the BHF grounds and barns for the actual weddings and receptions.
Acted as site manager for many of the actual weddings, for years.
To help expand the treasury of MAHA, I have volunteer hundreds of additional hours working at Teas,
making foods, serving at teas and then cleaning up after teas.
I also worked at Halloween Hoedowns over the years, many Easter Bunny Breakfasts, and Big Red Barn
Sales, to name a few.
I promoted an internship program for MAHS with the Executive Director, initially with my Alma mater
University of Wisconsin River Falls, and it expanded to other academic institutions. Interns were hired
to facilitate the successful MAHS Summer Camp program.
The interns also produced a historical program for members of MAHS and citizens at meetings.
I suggested and developed some of the first "Mysteries of Histories" program. Citizens were invited to
the new Maplewood Parks Building at Wakefield to find out about such things as "why is Maplewood
shaped like this!"
In my capacity as a member of the Human Recourses Committee of MAHS, I worked on drafting position
descriptions for MAHS executive positions. I was asked to be on the interview team for Summer Camp
Intern positions and when also to interview candidates for Wedding Coordinator, a paid position.
Over the years, I've devoted many volunteer hours to help of community realize the importance of the
History of Maplewood and the history of the Bruentrup Heritage Farm. My family has always been
interested in preserving the history of Maplewood, and I continue to do so.

Over the last 7 years as a MAHS gardener, Ted Hein has removed multiple invasive species
to add plantings that restore an 1891 farmyard landscape. Showcasing how German farm
gardens would have looked is why he is expanding the garden plots. To enrich the setting for
weddings and community events he is developing areas that respect the history of the
land. Even the 150+ year old apple tree he is working on cloning to recreate an old
authentic apple orchard. He weeds, waters and works toward the day when visitors will
experience the time when farm life was centered on a sustainable relationship to the land,
its produce and partnerships with the surrounding communities.
