Below is information regarding St. John's Hospital needs for mass transit support options.
• St. John's Hospital first opened in 1985 and was the first hospital to open with single occupancy
patient rooms. We are licensed for 184 inpatient beds & 50 bassinets (21 of the 50 are NICU,
able to take newborns 28 weeks and older)
• In December 2020, St. Joseph's Hospital closed as an Acute Care Hospital. Many of the high -end
services that were performed at St. Joseph's transferred to St. John's. (Bariatric Center of
Excellence, Complex Spine, Cardiac Surgery & Invasive Cardiac Services)
• In September 2022, the new vertical expansion included an Invasive Heart Care Center, with (2)
Cath Labs, (2) EP labs, (1) Hybrid OR Room and (14) Cardiac Special Care bays
• CY2022 Annual Stats:
0 12,500+ inpatient discharges
0 35 admits and 35 discharges per day
o Average Length of Stay is 3.4 days
0 111,000 Outpatient Registrations
0 43,000+ Emergency Department visits (118 per day)
0 5,200 Surgeries
0 555 C-sections (Proud of low C-section rate)
0 2476 Births
• Workforce:
0 1700 FTE's/1950 people
0 456 active medical staff
0 18 family practice residents
o Volunteers who donate 20,000 hours per year of their time
St. John's is currently work on additional growth strategies to increase services and capacity
As an aside, across the street from St. John's Hospital is the MHealth Fairview Clinics and Specialty
Center, which includes primary care services, imaging, urgent care, lab, same day surgery, breast center,
OB/GYN, and a vascular clinic.
Given the current and future status of St. John's Hospital, we are looking to partner with the City of
Maplewood and other partners to seek alternative options to single car transportation to support our
patients, visitors and staff.
