HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022-02-22 ENR Minutes MINUTES CITY OF MAPLEWOOD ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMISSION TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2022 7:00 P.M. (THIS MEETING WAS HELD REMOTELY VIA ZOOM AND CONFERENCE CALL) 1. CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Dosser called a meeting of the Environmental and Natural Resources Commission to order at 7:03 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Emma Broadnax, Commissioner Absent Rebecca Bryan, Vice Chairperson Present Kayla Dosser, Chairperson Present Benjamin Guell, Commissioner Present Mollie Miller, Commissioner Present Ann Palzer, Commissioner Present Ted Redmond, Commissioner Present (at 7:08 p.m.) Staff Present Shann Finwall, Environmental Planner 3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Commissioner Bryan moved to approve the agenda. Seconded by Commissioner Guell Ayes – Bryan, Guell, Dosser, Miller, Palzer The motion passed. 4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner Palzer moved to approve the January 25, 2022, ENR Commission meeting minutes. Seconded by Commissioner Miller Ayes – Bryan, Guell, Dosser, Miller, Palzer The motion passed. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS a. 2022 Work Plan and Environmental Priorities Implementation Strategies The Commission discussed the following: 1  The 2022 environmental priorities will include Climate Action Planning, Nature Center Task Force Recommendations, and Community Garden/Urban Agriculture.  Questions and comments regarding the environmental priorities: o How can the Commission support implementation of strategies outlined in the Nature Center Task Force recommendations? (Volunteer and assistance at Nature Center special events and programs.) o Will naturalists be hired to conduct the programs being put on by Community Education at the Nature Center? (Yes, the naturalists will be paid by Community Education.) o University of Minnesota Garden in a Box Program:  Contact them for supplies of seeds for community gardens.  Advertise the program for Maplewood residents. 6. NEW BUSINESS a. 2021 ENR Commission Annual Report The Commission reviewed the new format and approved the ENR Commission Annual Report with no changes. Environmental Planner Finwall stated the sustainability and solid waste portions of the report will be presented to the ENR Commission in March. 7. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS None. 8. COMMISSIONER PRESENTATIONS None. 9. STAFF PRESENTATIONS Environmental Planner Finwall updated the Commission on the following events and indicated there are opportunities to volunteer at the Arbor Day and Spring Clean Up events: a. Maplewood Tree Sale – March 7 (registration begins), May 21/23 (tree pick up) b. Arbor Day Event – May 14 (10 a.m. to noon at the Maplewood Nature Center) c. Spring Clean Up – May 21 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Aldrich Arena) 10. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Miller made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Vice-Chair Bryan. Ayes – All The motion passed. Chairperson Dosser adjourned the meeting at 7:53 p.m. 2
