ADJOURNMENT April, 2022 Help discover., tell and preserve Maplewood's history Apply for the City's Heritage Preservation Commission The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) was created to help the city of Maplewood with its overall historic preservation goals. These goals include supporting and protection of the city's history by preserving significant historical, cultural, architectural, or archaeological attributes. The HPC meets on the second Thursday of the month at City Hall, from 7 - 8 p.m. Commission members are expected to read the meeting materials in preparation for the meeting, which typically takes about a half hour. Service beyond that can be as extensive as you wish. If you're interested in applying for a commission opening, contact Joe Sheeran HPC Staff Liaison (651) 249-2061 joe.sheeranCa)mapiewoodmn.gov. Redevelopment coming to key areas By Jeff Thompson, Community Development Director Deals are inked and development is coming in two important Maplewood corridors. Recently, City Council approved the Gladstone House's sale to Beacon Interfaith Housing. The non-profit plans to build 40 affordable housing units for young families. The Frost Avenue property is ideal because of its proximity to transit and parks and trails, says the developer. If all goes as expected construction should start in the spring of 2023. At the corner of Frost and English, the City is applying for grants to demolish the former Moose Lodge. It will also begin a formal process to solicit bids for developing the 2-acre property. The goal is a high -density residential building with neighborhood -level retail. These developments are part of a major endeavor that includes beautifying Frost Avenue, improving its pedestrian and traffic safety and a complete overhaul of Wakefield Park to include a community building that overlooks the lake. In the North End, between St. Johns and the Maplewood Mall, Birch Run Shopping Center's owners are slated to re -develop the area. In the short-term, the shopping center will see a reconstruction of its east -facing stores, with the potential for expanding St. Johns Blvd all the way to the mall and multi -family housing to replace the south facing stores. This development is the first step in implementing the North End Plan, which aims to revitalize the area around the mall. It includes new retail, entertainment, housing, and health care.
