A. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held at Fire Station #2 and was called to order at 6:04 PM by
Co-Chairperson Hall.

1. Greeting/Commissioner Thoughts Roundtable
Officer Sypniewski has accepted a position with another agency and this will be his last meeting.

Mayor Slawik was appointed to the Metropolitan Council and councilmember Marylee Abrams
has been appointed the Mayor of the City of Maplewood. The city is accepting applications
through the end of the month for 2 open council positions.
2. Introduction from New Staff Liaison, Commander Mike Shortreed
term as staff liaison has ended and Commander Shortreed has replaced
him.
3. Discussion Regarding Who from the Community Commission Members Wish was
Involved in the Commission
The PAC members recommend the ability to seek out and select new members in an effort to
increase diverse representation. Multiple groups were identified: Karen, Hmong, Somali, African
American, Hispanic, youth, deaf community, Muslim (other religions?), and a Maplewood
business owner representative (or could be involved in a sub-group when/if a need is identified).
Current members would assist them in the application process and present their choices to the
resolution is necessary to modify the typical commission selection
process. A draft resolution will be brought to the next meeting for potential approval, which will
ultimately need to be brought to the council for final approval.
This action item was moved by Neblett, and seconded by Langdon.

F. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1. Update from Sub-Groups Regarding Data and Onboarding
Data Sub-Group:
Summary of the sub-discussion was distributed. The department will provide a
shortened version of the 2017 Enforcement Action Report, and then a check-in on data
mid-year.
Onboarding Sub-Group:
Draft onboarding process was distributed. A sample onboarding packet is to be created
and will be brought to next meeting. The layout of the new member orientation is still
ongoing.
G. COMMISSION PRESENTATIONS
Commissioner Langdon attended the January 14, 2019 city council meeting where Maplewood
Public Safety and community members were presented lifesaving awards for saving a 12-year-
old student at Maplewood Middle School.
Bryson, Langdon, and Neblett met with Sergeants Busack and Bierdeman to discuss the police
They noted that the department is doing great things. They
discussed an idea to have an award from the commission to recognize efforts.
H. STAFF PRESENTATIONS

Police officer hiring process is currently in-progress. We need oral interview panel participants.
Please let us know if you can assist for 2 days.
While this process is still a few months down the road yet, a sergeant promotion process will be
happening and we could use assistance for a half day interview process for that as well.
Senior citizen roadshows are happening this year the details have been posted on Facebook
event calendar on the website (maplewoodmn.gov).
