CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:03 PM by Chairperson Deeny. B. ROLL CALL Commissioners Sarah Deeny Chairperson Present Jon Brandt Commissioner Present Elizabeth “Marie” Garza Commissioner Present Sokunthea Soeun Commissioner Present Amy Stedman Commissioner Present Staff Liaison Paul Schnell Police Chief/Staff Liaison Present C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Commissioner Brandt moved to approve the agenda as submitted. Seconded by Commissioner Garza. Ayes - All The motion passed. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Approval of the January 04, 2016 HRC Minutes Commissioner Brandt moved to approve the January 04, 2016 Minutes as submitted. Seconded by Commissioner Stedman. Ayes – All The motion passed. D1 February 01, 2016 Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes E. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1. Update on St. Paul Foundation Racial Equity Grant project. Chief Schnell gave update and answered questions of the Commission. F. NEW BUSINESS 1. Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (This item is on the agenda to give the Commissioners an opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on meetings or forums that they have attended) Commissioner Garza talked about contaminated water issue in Flint, MI. Chief Schnell discussed the possibility of Maplewood to host a forum to provide information about a legislative proposal for gun violence protection orders. Chairperson Deeny talked about Governor Dayton’s Diversity Inclusion Council, which was created in January. Chairperson Deeny talked about the City of Bloomington Human Rights Commission to host a screening on the film, “Selma: Bridge to the Ballot,” followed by a discussion on voting rights. 2. Discuss implementation of youth-focused programs. Commissioner Garza led a discussion on the need to implement youth programs in Maplewood. Timothy Turner, co-founder of Young Mentor’s Group, youth programming at Saint Paul library, talked about his work and answered questions of the commission. Amy Boese, works with youth at the Maplewood Library, talked about looking for partnerships with the community to develop a program where professionals come in to talk to teens. Charley Swanson, from Woodland Hills Church, presented and discussed its services, delivered through partnerships, and answered questions of the commission. Courtney Roessler, from Merrick Community Services Food Shelf, talked about working in partnership with Woodland Hills Church and its service to the Maplewood community. G.
