Adjournment MINUTES CITY OF MAPLEWOOD Human Rights Commission 7:00 PM, Thursday, December 9, 2014 Council Chambers, City Hall A. CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:00pm by Chairperson Danielson. B. ROLL CALL Commissioners Nate Danielson Chairperson Present Annastacia Belladonna-Carrera Commissioner Absent Jon Brandt Commissioner Present Sarah Deeny Commissioner Present Maurice Fortin Commissioner Absent Marie Garza Commissioner Present Staff Liaison Karen Haag City Clerk/Staff Liaison Absent Deb Schmidt Deputy City Clerk Present Paul Schnell Police Chief Present C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Commissioner Deeny moved to approve the agenda as submitted. Seconded by Commissioner Garza Ayes - All The motion passed. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Approval of the October 14, 2014 HRC Minutes Commissioner Brandt moved to approve the October 14, 2014 HRC Minutes as submitted. Seconded by Commissioner Garza Ayes – All The motion passed. E. NEW BUSINESS 1. Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (No Report) The commission engaged in a conversation regarding the protests that are going on across the country as a response to the state of affairs in Ferguson, MO Police Chief Schnell reported on the procedures used by the Maplewood Police Department as they related to the protests and incidents occurring around the country. The commission discussed the idea of hosting a public forum for the community to discuss Civil Rights and the protests that are happening around the county. This idea will be discussed further during the January 2015 HRC meeting. F. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 1. Discussion on Student Video Essay Contest (No Report) The Commission discussed details about the student video essay contest and plans to pursue promotion of the contest. Commissioner Deeny proposed moving the deadline for the contest back to March 2015. Commissioner Brandt proposed changing the name of the contest to Youth Video Essay Contest. G. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS / STAFF PRESENTATIONS 1. Approval of Draft Resolution for Council Consideration, Recognizing the Second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day Commissioner Garcia proposed delaying the approval of the draft Resolution to approximately March 2015. Commissioner Deeny proposed forming an ad hoc committee to continue moving forward on the Resolution Commissioner Brandt proposed inviting members of the community to participate in the discussion. H. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS Commissioner Brandt spoke on the recent hire of Melinda Coleman as the new City Manager of Maplewood. I. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Brandt moved to adjourn the meeting at 8:27pm. Seconded by Commissioner Deeny Ayes – All The motion passed. E1 AGENDA REPORT TO: Human Rights Commission Members FROM: Karen Haag, Citizen Services Director/Staff Liaison DATE: January 8, 2015 SUBJECT: Community Listening Session Introduction: In light of recent events nationally the Commission has organized a Community Listening Session to discuss police accountability and public safety. The panel of quest speakers will give a brief introduction and be opened to questions from the Commission and participating audience members who will be given an opportunity to submit questions to the panel. News of the Listening Session has been shared with the public by Commission Members, a news release and noticed on Clear Channel billboards located in Maplewood on Highway 36 and on 694. Please see the attached flyer for additional information.
