HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/06/2004Maplewood Human Relations Commission Meeting Minutes Tuesday,January 6,2004 Members present: Barbara Damchik-Dykes,Marilyn Gebauer,Roberta Hawkins,Gordy Heininger,Elmo Mattox, Carol Watnemo Ex-officio: Karen Guilfoile Elmo Mattox called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes: Motion was made by Barb to approve the minutes. Seconded by Gordy. Motion passed. III. Approval of Agenda: No additions. Agenda approved. IV. Old Business: A. The Speaking Contest: The speaking contest does not match with the venue of the People's Fair at North. Premier Bank will donate$500.00 to support a Speaking Contest. A booth will be available at the People's Fair for this Commission-this booth can be used to give information about the Commission and also to advertise the contest. Gordy and Elmo will contact the Speech teachers at North,Tartan, and Hill Murray. Marilyn and Karen will coordinate the booth at the People's Fair. Elmo and Carol will assist as needed. A possible judge could be the president of Premier Bank. The school will be awarded the prize to be used to increase the awareness of diversity in the community. The Speech Teachers will help define the rules for the students. Barb will check school websites. Karen will contact person from the Pioneer Press and put on Maplewood's Web Page and contact GTN for Cable broadcast. Possible dates of April 17 or 24. Barb will design flier and give to Karen. Barb and Carol responsible for publicity for the Speaking Contest. Jeff will be responsible for the physical setup. Gordy and Elmo will ask the speech teachers for the Award Date in the respective school, their opinion of having a keynote speaker. An invitation will be extended to the Mayor to attend the Speaking contest. A certificate will be presented to each student who participates in the contest. Possible Topics: o Defining Diversity o How Have I Been Affected by Diversity? o What Does Diversity Mean to Me? o Is Our Community Diverse? o How Do You Teach Diversity? o The Importance of Diversity o My Diverse World o Highlight each letter—speaker do a word starting with each letter Human Relations Commission January 6—Meeting Minutes Page 2 B. Providing information in other languages Fast Signs of Roseville will print banner for$50,and have it completed in 2-3 days. Motion made by Marilyn to purchase a banner. Seconded by Barb. Motion passed. V. New Business A. Jeff Kringle will appear before the City Council on 1/12/at 6:45 p.m. B. Gordy and Elmo both need to be re-appointed by the City Council on 1/12/04. VI. Reports Barb will give a report in February for CulturaUEthnic Update VII. February Agenda Items A. Keynote speaker for Speaking Contest B. Date for Speaking Contest VIII.
