Gov.-elect Tim Walz announced five cabinet commissioners Dec. 18, naming Maplewood Mayor Nora Slawik to head
the Metropolitan Council.
Slawik, who has been mayor for five years, will resign from her city post in January.
She handily won re-election in November’s election with 63 percent of the vote.
Commissioner nominations need state Senate confirmation, but can serve prior to being confirmed.
The mayor also has legislative experience, having served seven terms in the Minnesota House.
“As suburban mayor of Maplewood, Mayor Slawik understands very clearly communities in the Twin Cities region and
what it takes for them to succeed,” Walz said at a press conference announcing his picks.
“I’m really excited to be part of the the Waltz-Flanagan team,” said Slawik after taking the podium.
Slawik said a “regional approach is key to community prosperity,” and that her plan for prosperity includes a
comprehensive transportation package for “regional transportation and greater Minnesota transit” that is consistently
funded.
“I’ve been working on issues in the East Metro for many years and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work
for one Minnesota,” she said.
