SUBJECT: Battle Creek Playground Redevelopment Program
Introduction
Battle Creek Regional Park, located in the City of Maplewood, is operated bythe
Ramsey County Parks and Recreation Department as part of the Metropolitan Council’s
Regional Parks and Trails Program. A single play area wasdeveloped near the picnic
pavilion and Water Works Water Park north of Upper Afton Road. The play area, which
was installed in 1995, isbeyond itsscheduled life cycle. In addition, the play area is
located in a stormwater management flood zone and has seen flooding each of the last
several years.
With these issues in mind, Ramsey County Parks took a larger look at the play area and
how it relates to the uses in that area of the park. It was determined that the play area
needed to be relocated out of the floodplainand it needed to be more representative of a
Regional Park, possibly a destination in its own right.
