The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by Chair Gordy Heininger_ Mike McGuire introducedhimselfandwelcomedeveryonetothejointmeeting.Mike stated that human rights is a high priority in Maplewood. He then turned the meeting back to the chair, Gordy Heininger. AIl in attendance introduced themselves_ The agenda included short presentations by members of the Maplewood and Roseville commissions_ The Maplewood commisssion shared information on the following: Diversity Awareness Award Contest- Carol Cude Diversity Awareness Poster Contest -Lynne Croes Open House-Marie Koehler Response to Bias and Prejudice plan - Gordy Heininger Community event-Regina Laroche-Theme Members from the Roseville commission Shared how they are using the community cable access channel to reach out to the community. They have plans to produce a regular program and to offer public service spots using the LI1IHRC posters. They sponsor an essay contest for the middle school students_ The theme ofthe Roseville JiRC is to create partnerships with other HRC's,the police department and other groups. They have given out an Award ofExcellence to businesses for human relations_ The businesses are recognized for how they make a difference or did something unique concerning human relations. The winners for the essay contest and the business awards are recognized at a city council meeting_ They have a budget to use for the award plaques. Mr.Ryweck interjected that the HRC's could work together to develop a video series and each individual 1JRC be responsible for one program that would be shown on the cable access channels_ Stillwater TEgh School sponsored a Iogo contest for their commission_ Entries came from the community and the elementary schools. In response to an incident involving some elementarystudents, some high school students gave presentations to the younger students on harassment. White Bear Lake also has an award program, for a group and an individual. They seek nominations through the local paper. Any individual or group who has worked to improve human relations can be nominated They also present a plaque to the winners at a city council meeting. OVER"4) Susan Forsyth from the Roseville commission talked about their efforts to acquire grant money from a group serving people with disabilities to develop a video on disability and gender equity issues. They did not receive the grant. They approached the LMF{RC and the City ofRoseville and were given some money but they need more. They are talking with other cities to get funding, but nothing has been confirmed yet_ We then discussed the possibility of sponsoring a joint community event. The topic could be domestic violence, sexual harassment or another pertinent issue. At this point,Regine Laroche-. Theune, explained our community event from 1995. A brochure from a local theatrical group, Theater at Work" was handed out. They provide a variety of performances as a reasonable cost. Other theater groups, such as Mixed Blood or Illusion, are much more costly. There was no decision as to the topic ofa community event or of offering it jointly with area RRCs. Mort suggested using programs that Channel 2 has available and having a follow-up discussion. This could be broadcast over the cable access channels_ He suggested we develop a proposal for a joint community event, send it to the area HRCs and ask ifthey want to co-sponsor it. Sherrie Le explained the current plans for a Maplewood Open House. The plan is to do it jointly with the Community Center and have it on "National Night Out" (Aug. 6). The local restaurants would be invited as part of a"Taste ofMaplewood" activity. All the city commissions would also participate. The joint meeting was adjourned at this point_ The Maplewood commission members briefly discussed the awards programs for the diveristy poster contest. Presentation School has scheduled their program for April 12. Marie agreed to attend and Lynne will be the backup_ Maria has the cel ti icate design ready and will fax it to Sherrie for approval. When the cet tificates are ready, Sherrie will get the signatures. The next meeting is May 7. (Task Force, Committee, etc.) Linda Wainio 2/96 Agenda Topic - Interviewing candidates. Maria Cantu-Costilla's Suggestions: I. Appoint an interviewing team. Maybe a group of three or four of the MRC members and two members from the City Council. All candidates could be interviewed as a group like when I interviewed, but this would eliminate having to come back for a second interview in front of the City Council members. 2. The team could produce a list of questions that could be answered by the applicants. This would ensure fairness in using the same questions each time there was a need to interview-applicants. 3 nterviewapplicants. 3 :\13. Arrange to interview on a night other than an IIRC meeting or else if it rY is the same night as a scheduled meeting let the agenda be only for A-the interviewing process.
