Commissioners will discuss the award at the May HPC meeting. Discussion At the April 10 HPC meeting, commissioners Currie and Gaspar presented some thoughts about the proposed Heritage Business Award. Before having the committee develop criteria for the award, we would like to have another discussion about the pros and cons of having such an award. Staff has receivedcomments that commissioners should considerin their discussion: Too many awards waters down the value. Awards should only be given when earned. A business heritage award needs tofocus on significant contributions to Maplewood history or to preservationof Maplewood history.A beloved mom-and-pop shopprobably shouldn’t receive a heritageawardunless they’ve made a significant contribution to Maplewood history or preservation. The city newsletter, Maplewood Living, has been doing articles which recognizelocal businesses. A recent example is attached (Attachment 1). Economic development is an important goal for City Council and Council, staff, and the Housing and Economic DevelopmentCommission(HEDC)have a strong focus on local businesses. Commissioners are asked to address the following:The existing annual Heritage Preservation Award can be awarded to individuals, families, or businesses. Why do we need a second award if the existing award can go to businesses? What are the pros and cons of having a separate business heritage award? Ifcommissioners want to pursue the Business Heritage Award, please provide suggestions for criteria for the award. Recommendation Commissioners will discuss the pros and cons of having a Business Heritage Award. 6bi Attachments: 1.Article from May 2014 Maplewood Living 6bi, Attachment 1
