HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-05-18 PRC Minutes CITY OF MAPLEWOOD PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING Meeting Minutes Wednesday, May 18, 2011 7:00PM COUNCIL CHAMBERS – MAPLEWOOD CITY HALL 1830 COUNTY ROAD B EAST 1.CALL TO ORDER Chair Schmidt indicated there was a quorum and called the meeting to order. 2.ROLL CALL Commissioners Commissioner Craig Brannon, present Commissioner Don Christianson, present Commissioner Peter Fischer, present Commissioner Dan Maas, present Commissioner Bruce Roman, present Commissioner Therese Sonnek, present Commissioner Roy Adams, present Commissioner Rhoda Erhardt, present Chair Kim Schmidt, present Staff Recreation Supervisor, Jim Taylor, present Recreation Manager, Audra Robbins, absent Parks and Recreation Director, DuWayne Konewko, absent 3.APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA Commissioner Fischer moved to approve the agenda. Seconded by Commissioner Brannon. Ayes: All The motion passed. 4.APPROVAL OF MINUTES a.April 20, 2011 – Workshop Meeting b.April 20, 2011 – Regular Meeting Commissioner Maas noted that on page three under Commissioner Comments the word do should be due. c.May 4, 2011 – Special Meeting-CIP Commissioner Maas moved to approve the minutes as amended. Њ Seconded by Commissioner Roman. Ayes: Brannon, Christianson, Fischer, Maas, Roman, Sonnek, Schmidt Abstain: Adams, Erhardt The motion passed. 5. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS a. Maplewood Vacant Property on Roselawn at Edgerton (Alan Kantrud) Alan Kantrud, City Attorney, presented and updated the commission on details regarding the vacant property on Roselawn at Edgerton. Mr. Kantrud answered questions and addressed concerns of the commission. b. Trout Brook Trail Master Plan (Bill Sanders) Bill Sanders, Sanders Wacker Bergly, Inc. presented the Trout Brook Trail Master Plan to the commission and answered questions of the commission. Commissioner Fischer moved to recommend that the Trout Brook Master Plan be brought to City Council for presentation. Seconded by Commissioner Christianson. Ayes: All The motion passed. c. MCC Aquatics (Ron Horwath) Ron Horwath, Aquatic Program Manager, updated the commission on the projects for the MCC aquatic center and upcoming programs at the MCC. Mr. Horwath answered questions and concerns of the commission. 6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS a. Recycling in the Parks Jim Taylor, Recreation Supervisor, updated the commission on the status of the Recycling in the Parks Program and answered questions. b. Four Seasons Dog Exercise Area Jim Taylor, Recreation Supervisor, updated the commission on the Four Seasons dog exercise area and answered questions. c. Western Hills Street Improvements Jim Taylor, Recreation Supervisor, updated the commission on the Western Hills street improvements and answered questions. 7. NEW BUSINESS Ћ 8. STAFF PRESENTATIONS a. Goodrich Park Master Plan Jim Taylor, Recreation Supervisor, informed the commission that the Goodrich master Plan was approved by City Council and updated the commission on the process and status of the plan. b. GO! Get Outdoors Celebration Jim Taylor, Recreation Supervisor, presented the schedule of events and activities that will take place at the GO! Get Outdoors Celebration to the commission. 9. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Maas suggested that it would be useful to include information regarding parking for our individual parks on the website, as well as the address and/or intersections of the parks. Commissioner Brannon inquired about the large hole in the field at Harvest Park. Mr. Taylor informed him that the hole will be filled and explained that there is an issue with that particular hole and that it continues to sink after repeatedly being filled. Commissioner Roman inquired about no smoking signs at the parks, and suggested that more signs be placed in the parks. Mr. Taylor informed him that staff is working towards making that a reality. Mr. Roman also welcomed the two new commission members. Commissioner Sonnek inquired about the placement of hot coals left over from the grills at the parks, and if there was a designated place for hot coals to be placed. Commissioner Sonnek welcomed the new commissioners and thanked the City Council for targeting specific areas in order to find a good fit for the Parks and Recreation Commission. Commissioner Adams thanked the commission for their hospitality and expressed his excitement as a new member of the commission. Commissioner Erhardt shared with the commission her amazement at the work and effort that goes into the city’s parks and recreation. Commissioner Schmidt welcomed the new commissioners. 10. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Fischer moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by Commissioner Roman.
