Present: Kampf, Vanderpoel, Malley, Ashworth, Banks, Larsen,
Grant.
Guest: Judy Fletcher and Earl Marlow.
ti
Minutes of May 6th approved as mailed. Minutes of June 3
approved with one correction--page 2 - 1st paragraph - sixth
line . . . substitute human relations training for "sensitivity"
training.
Budget: No problems foreseen as projected.
Pay: Discusion of memo from Mike Miller to Council.
Motion made and carried . . . Chairperson write Mike
Miller agreeing with his premise and adding that the Council
should use their own discretion for other boards and commissions,
some of whose members spend many, many hours away from home.
HRAs Proposed survey - Archer Heights.
The HRA submitted a proposed survey form for our critique .
Archer Heights is the only 235 development passed in Maplewood.
The results of the survey will be a sound basis on which to
begin HRA work. Consensus--good idea: Kampf will pass on sug-
gested changes.
AAP: No new developments . Ashworth - report next meeting.
League of MHRC: Material on League Annual Meeting, Legislative
goals and aims, new League set up to fall
within tax exempt status, had previously been mailed. Larsen:
requested comments and any instructions to be relayed back to
League Board. Suggested . . . League make a comparison between
what the League goals were and how they were actually met; would
like continuation of "Action Alerts " by way of education--short
first legislative session coming up soon.
Brisson: Mayor Bruton stepped in to tell us that Mr. Brisson
had lodged a complaint with him because the MHRC
had not accepted his application for membership. What to do
about the complaint. Discussion. Boils down to procedural
question. By by-law we have the right of review and recommenda-
tion. Mayor left the matter in our hands.
Kampf: Re : District 623 - Roseville .
Interviewed Frank McCrae who initiates HR training.
Much impressed: Good feeling within school district about the
program. Supt Nelson did not have a break down where train-
ing was being done. Have grant this year for the study of
Indian problems which will be used by curriculum group. Working
on elimination of sexism e.g. with industrial arts and home
economics programs. Reviewing texbooks as they come up for
replacement. Q. AAP? No one assigned:

2-8/12/75
Grant: EEOC Report #168A. Copies available at the meeting.
District #622 Report dated 1/5/75 (made out every year) .
Very poor showing. Gauvin has been assigned to work out AAP.
Copy of material given to him by the State Dept of Education
as a model included in this mailing. ) Nothing has been done with
it yet. Q. Was MHRC help offered? No. AA Policy plan from
Dept of Education will be discussion item on September agenda.
Janet will check out status of Tony Buhl' s survey.
Banks: State Dept of Education has HRC and each local has to
have one ; D of E did a study on sexism and their own
delegate run assembly disapproved it. Joe will try to get
a copy for us.
Challenge by Chairperson:
Where do you want to go and what would you like to do;
tackle two school districts or one ; employment or curriculum;
textbooks or extra curricular activities such as sports;
check and compare district texts; should we look into
parent-teacher-administrator problems for our own community; °
work shops; is this one of our functions?
Citizens Curriculum Committee - good idea to get one of us on it.
We have a good deal of data available to us. How do we assume
leadership -- only after we have well documented rational.
Buhl survey; are we going to zero in on high school-elementary
senior what; Banks discussed acme of the tangibles and attitudes
which disturb him about the school his children attend . . .
should we contact the black community and check out some of
these dissatisfactions?
We will start with curriculum -- Motion made and carried we
would obtain a list of the texbooks in use in the two schools
districts. The NEA has fully developed criteria on curriculum
and texts; Joe Banks will obtain. Also contact Pam Hanson and
Judy Rhodes who dealt with the survey. Further, a letter will
be written to both school superintendents advising them of our
interest and that we are going to begin an in-depth study of
the curriculum--ask for their cooperation. Agenda item for
September meeting.
For September meeting come back with concrete suggestions on
what we want to cover. Perhaps update on the two agenda items
mentioned above will give us our direction.
