ADJOURNMENT C.\WPWIN60WRC.AGENDA 05;22/95 15: 1-1 FAX 612 297 1329 Labor & Industry- HI2 Maplewood Human Relations Commission Minutes from May 2, 1995 Present:Marie Koehler, Carol Cude, Gordy Heininger, Gari Schiff Regina Laroche-Theune, Lynne Croes,Linda Wainio Ex-officio: Sherrie Le, Mike McGuire The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm by Chair Marie Koehler. A motion to approve the agenda was moved, seconded and passed_ A motion to approve the minutes was made after suggesting that Lynne sign the minutes with Respectfully submitted______". Motion seconded and approved_ Old Business inall rearpati_ s r en house: Marie designed a flyer advertising "Soulsjourney" for the open house. Suggestions on content and to add a notice of need for sign language interpretation were discussed. This will be mailed out to our usual mailing list recipients_ Marie has arranged to get some bookmarks with a multicultural message to hand out The schedule for setting up, staffing and cleaning up the display wa,s arranged. Gordy, Carol and Gail will set up and staffthe display 1,4 from 4-6 pm. Lynne, Linda,‘T\ ian't Regina will staff and clean up from 6-8 prn_ Gail will look for a brochure on gay/lesbian issues and Sherrie will get the table, chairs and supplies we need_ At this point,Marie left to attend her evening class (7.30 pm). Feedback on Awards Ceremony: The ceremonies at Mounds Park and Presentation went well. At Mounds Park, one teacher had selected posters to submit for competition_ Since this had happened, not all children who made posters would get a certificate. Next year we will state that all enti ies will receive certificates on our promotional materials. Elate Crime response: The revised proposal was discussed and two revisions were suggested: #2- The Commission or the Chief of Police wiiI mail a letter of support to the victim(s)...." and#G- add titles/positions and names of. Chief ofPolice, City Manager, Human Resources Office, Commission Chair, Hate Crimes Response Coordinator_ A brief discussion on training for commission members followed. Sherrie suggested the Mort Ryweck,League ofMiinnesota Human Rights Commissions, speak to our group_ We decided to invite him to the October meeting. We need to understand what we should say and do, and not say and do. Community Events:Regina had contacted Illusion Theatre and Mixed Blood Theatre about performances they could offer in the fall. After disrussing the possibilities, she suggested that we sponser a discussion on race and prejudice following the opening night performance of To Kill a Mockingbird. Regina has been hired as the assistant director for the summer youth theater program This idea was eagerly agreed upon. The play will be held in the theater ofthe 05,:22 :95 15: 15 FAX 612 297 1329 Labor & Industry ZW 3 community center on July 27, 28, 29. We will see if the mayor will be available to lead the discussion. We would also like to have refreshments available in the banquet room, which must be reserved. Gail and Lynne will assist Regina in planning this_ We will announce it in the July issue of"Maplewood in Motion." Information must be submitted for publication no later than June 1. New Business Tri-District Community School: Marilyn Vars joined us to describe and explain the plans for the tri-district multicultural school to open in the fall of 1996. Attendance will be open to any student in District 622,Roseville area schools and St Paul public schools. The purpose and design are wonderful and we fully support the intent ofthe plans. Annual report: The report has been sent out to local businesses and organizations_ Other Business: none Reports: none Agenda items for June: Open house critique view video on the tri-district school advertising for the play and discussion up-date Invitation response to Mort Ryweck for the October meeting Other discussion: Carol expressed concern about the difficulty some audience members have when attending the city council meetings. When the members discuss things they often turn awaay from the microphone. Anyone with hearing loss then can't hear well or at all. Mike said that he would address to the council members.
