I...TI ..... .O.............P B......U......S....................E.....S......S..... A. HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION BROCHURE We decided to change graphics on the cover to a pair of hands clasping. Brochure is intended as informational/promotional tool to expose community to MHRC and give means to contact the Commission. Discussion was made of type print and adding the quote from MHRC Annual Report: It is never too late to give up your prejudices" Henry David Thoreau B. HRC ESSAY CONTEST It was moved that we continue the essay contest for another year. For a possible $500 scholarship award, we are requested to submit a letter to the sponsors as to the rationale for the contest. Next month we will come prepared with possible topics and will consider whether to award Maplewood students only or any District 622 student. HRC Minutes 02/05/91 Page Two C. PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES Breakfast meetings with featured speakers were discussed. We are to think of names for possible speakers and whether we would want to meet regularly (perhaps monthly) or annually. Discussion of news articles written by Commission members to continue. Gordon said that he would contact St. Paul Board of Realtors, Mr. Holm, Executive Director, to determine instances of discrimination. D. POLICE Karla suggested that MHRC provide a list of agencies which can help people in emergencies for various reasons. Dawn will bring a list provided by MDHR during no-fault grievance training. E. Dawn presented an article published in the Maplewood Review regarding Weaver School 's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities. A. HUMAN RIGHTS/MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY Discussion of Gary Bastian's proposed Maplewood Human Rights Day; perhaps we could tie in his proposal with our interests in developing a breakfast meeting. We will consider this topic next month. B. ANNUAL REPORT Next month input will be given for this report. Gail showed a calendar which spotlighted individuals associated with each of the Bill of Rights; this material could enhance the calendar in our annual report. C. RESOLUTION Karla showed joint resolutions of appreciation to be given to Scott and Carol . They will be invited to attend the next meeting in order to receive their certificates. Sister Claire will bring cookies. Motion was made, seconded, and ayes all to approve resolutions and to invite Scott and Carol to the March 5 meeting. laWgREPORTS A. League of MHRCs have changed meeting dates to avoid Sabbath time. B. CITY Gordon will serve as the new liaison to the Committee on Seniors and Others With Special Living Needs, on which he currently serves. Possibility of a budget cut which would affect the Maplewood Human Relations Commission. HRC Minutes 02/05/91 Page Three C. GRIEVANCES None. D. OTHER Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Human Rights position is still open for appointment.
