Halloran From: Karla Sand, Chairperson Maplewood Human Relations Commission On behalf of the Human Relations Commission, I invite each of you to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, December 4th at City Hall in the Maplewood Room. We would like an opportunity to meet you and hear why you would like to become a member of our Commission. An outline of Commission responsibilities is enclosed for your review. We will have you on the agenda for 8:00 p.m. , however, you are welcome to join us at the beginning of the meeting (7:00 p.m. ) . If you cannot join us, please contact the City Manager's Office at 770-4524 and leave a message for Gail Blackstone, staff liaison to the Commission. Looking forward to meeting you. MINUTES Maplewood Human Relations Commission Tuesday, November 13, 1990 7 : 00 P . M. Maplewood City Hall Present : Absent : Dawn Vassar Carol Engel Pat Williamson Sr . Claire Lynch Gail Blackstone Karla Sand Paul Sand Mike McGuire Scott Rostron I . CALL TO ORDER--7 : 12 P .M. II . MINUTES--Motion made, seconded, and approved to accept with the addition in III-A that we changed the essay contest from 9th to 12th grade . III . OLD BUSINESS A . Essay Contest--We received three entries for this year ' s essay contest . Gail coded the essays so that we could evaluate them without knowing the identity of the authors . JE"s essay was judged the winner . Dawn will contact Gail and the winner ' s school to check into the possibility of presenting the award at the school . If is presented at City Hall we set December 10 at 3 : 00 or 4 : 00 P .M. as a possible time . Dawn will ask Gail to make those arrangements if necessary . B. Human Rights Award---Deadline for nominees is November 26 . As of November 13 no nominations had been received. Announcement has appeared in Maplewood in Motion and been sent to THe Pioneer Press and the Maplewood Review. Gail will send information on the award to the principals of schools in the district . If nominations are received, we will evaluate them at the December meeting . C . Response to Acts of Violence and Prejudice--Gail reported that our police chief said that he would refer any such requests to First Call for Help . D . Racial Incidents--Scott said that he has been aware of more racial incidents this fall than at any time in the last decade . Because we suspect that there may be more of this going on in the schools and in the community at large than we are directly aware of , Gail will ask Mike Herbert to attend the first half hour or so of our December meeting to give us his impressions . We will ask him if he sees any changes from last year to this and his view of what in general is going on in the schools regarding racial issues . Scott will contact Kathy Huyen to invite her or her designate to this portion of our meeting . Paul will soon attend a session on a ,Quaker multicultural awareness program aimed at elementary and middle school students called Green Circles . He thinks that there is some possibility that we could get a grant from US West to get this program started in our local schools . IV . NEW BUSINESS A . Applicants for HRC Vacancy--Gail said that to date four people have expressed an interest in serving on the Commission . She will invite them to attend the December meeting in its entirety or at 8 : 00, as they prefer . The last item on the December agenda will be talking with these individuals to determine which one will , be invited to join the Commission . V . REPORTS A . League--No report B. City of Maplewood 1 . Gail received a confirmation from Premier Bank that the will again donate a $100 cash prize to the essay contest winner . 2 . Gail presented a draft copy of a new brochure for the commission which the staff put together . We should let her know if there are any additions/corrections and then she will have copies made . 3 . Mike updated us on the progress of planning for the community center . The committee will present its findings to the council next week and will recommend that the center be built . C . Grievances--- Gail received a notice to stop working on a grievance that we were not currently working on. MEETING ADJOURNED 9 : 00 P .M.
