I . CALL TO ORDER--7 : 12 P .M.
II . MINUTES--Motion made, seconded, and approved to accept with
the addition in III-A that we changed the essay contest from 9th
to 12th grade .
III . OLD BUSINESS
A . Essay Contest--We received three entries for this year ' s
essay contest . Gail coded the essays so that we could evaluate
them without knowing the identity of the authors . JE"s essay was
judged the winner . Dawn will contact Gail and the winner ' s
school to check into the possibility of presenting the award at
the school . If is presented at City Hall we set December 10 at
3 : 00 or 4 : 00 P .M. as a possible time . Dawn will ask Gail to make
those arrangements if necessary .
B. Human Rights Award---Deadline for nominees is November 26 .
As of November 13 no nominations had been received. Announcement
has appeared in Maplewood in Motion and been sent to THe Pioneer
Press and the Maplewood Review. Gail will send information on
the award to the principals of schools in the district . If
nominations are received, we will evaluate them at the December
meeting .
C . Response to Acts of Violence and Prejudice--Gail reported
that our police chief said that he would refer any such requests
to First Call for Help .
D . Racial Incidents--Scott said that he has been aware of
more racial incidents this fall than at any time in the last
decade . Because we suspect that there may be more of this going
on in the schools and in the community at large than we are
directly aware of , Gail will ask Mike Herbert to attend the first
half hour or so of our December meeting to give us his
impressions . We will ask him if he sees any changes from last
year to this and his view of what in general is going on in the
schools regarding racial issues . Scott will contact Kathy Huyen
to invite her or her designate to this portion of our meeting .
Paul will soon attend a session on a ,Quaker multicultural
awareness program aimed at elementary and middle school students
called Green Circles . He thinks that there is some possibility
that we could get a grant from US West to get this program
started in our local schools .
IV . NEW BUSINESS
A . Applicants for HRC Vacancy--Gail said that to date four
people have expressed an interest in serving on the Commission .
She will invite them to attend the December meeting in its
entirety or at 8 : 00, as they prefer . The last item on the
December agenda will be talking with these individuals to
determine which one will , be invited to join the Commission .
V . REPORTS
A . League--No report
B. City of Maplewood
1 . Gail received a confirmation from Premier Bank that
the will again donate a $100 cash prize to the essay contest
winner .
2 . Gail presented a draft copy of a new brochure for the
commission which the staff put together . We should let her know
if there are any additions/corrections and then she will have
copies made .
3 . Mike updated us on the progress of planning for the
community center . The committee will present its findings to the
council next week and will recommend that the center be built .
C . Grievances--- Gail received a notice to stop working on a
grievance that we were not currently working on.
