HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/06/1988MINUTES MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION December 6 , 1988 PRESENT Sist_er Claire Lynch, President Karla Sand Pat Williamson Gail Blackstone Mike McGuire , City Manager ABSENT Scott Rostron Clemence Kwapick 1 . Approval of Minutes Motion to accept the minutes of the November 1 , 1988 meeting as submitted was made , seconded and voted in favor . 2 . Old Business Grievances - None pending at this time . Gail presented reports from the MN Department of Human Rights . Karla will review and return to Gail for the permanent file . 3 . Essay Contest One essay was submitted for the essay contest . A motion was made, seconded and voted in favor of awarding the first prize to Kathleen Westerhaus of Transfiguration School . Sister Claire read the essay and the Commission agreed it was an excellent essay and should receive the first prize. Pat Williamson will call Kathleen and notify her and find out if she is available for the award presentation on December 14 at 4 : 00 in the City Hall . Pat will also write up a factual information sheet on the contest to present to the press at the award ceremony . Sister Claire will call the principal of Transfiguration School , Don Regan, and the Maplewood Review and the Pioneer Press . Mike McGuire will organize the award ceremony at the City Hall and notify the Mayor. 4 . Human Rights Award The presentation of the award to Mrs . Hughes will be on Thursday , January 26 , at 3M Company in conjunction with the Suburban Chamber of Commerce. Pat Williamson sent a confirming letter to Mrs . Hughes and will send a letter inviting Mr . O'Mara , last years winner , to attend the presentation. Karla Sand will send thank you letters to the other 2 nominators . Gail Blackstone will get the plaque to award Mrs . Hughes . 5 . Bylaws Mike presented a draft of the revised bylaws which included new language on absenteeism of members of the Commission . Motion was made , seconded and voted in favor of accepting the additions to the bylaws as submitted. ( copy attached) 6 . New Business Human Rights Day - December 9 , 1988 - Pat , Karla , Mike and Gail would like to attend. The City agreed to pay the registration. 7 . Commission Member Tenure Gail presented a list of members ' tenure. She will review the dates on Pat and Scott to see if they weren' t renewed in January of 1988 . 8 . Miscellaneous Sister Claire will invite Mrs . Hughes to the Commission February meeting to report on the minority community and how the Commission may be of. assistance. The Commission agreed to submit a letter to School District 622 on the desegration plan and let them know we are available for input . Karla will draft a letter .
