MAPLEWiOOD HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
The first Maplewood Human Rights Award is to Ed and Dd 1ores
O' Mara. As a couple they have demonstrated a commitment to pre-
serving the dignity and worth of all persons which was felt ex-
emp1ary and worthy of recognition.
The accomplishments of the couple are many and varied and as Ed
states, could not be accomplished without their mutual efforts
and support.
In 1950 as President of the Gladstone Community Club, Ed and
Dolores convinced Florence Hughes to become editor of the com-
munity newspaper. Florence and her husband Jim lived on a farm
on the 'burners of County Road B and Hazelwood Street as one of
the first black families in the New Canada township.
When developers wanted to buy and develop Jim' s property, it was
Ed who as a local government official convinced Jim to develop
that property himself. Ed was instrumental in getting the lots
assessed individually for improvements which helped make this
possible. This neigbcrhood is now a fully developed and a
beautiful part of the community.
At 3M Ed hired what was then one of the first black employees in
a. 3M laboratory who is still employed by 3M. Additionally Ed was
instrumental while a member of the Police Civil Service Commis-
sion, an office he held for 22 years, In changing the title of
policeman and policewoman to police officer. Ed has been very
active in the United Way and ether Social Service organizations,
and recently won United Ways "unsung hero" award.
Ed was a supervisor in the New Canada township, a Councilman for
the village of Maplewood, and served 22 years on the Civil Serv-
ice Commission which totals over 30 years of public service. Ed
lead committees for the building of churches and schools in
Maplewood, organized fund raising to keep Hill High School open
during difficult times, and was instrumental in a merger that
created Hill Murray High School. Ed has been active in the Boy
Scouts of America as a volunteer since 1934, and is currently a
hc,nary life member of the Indianhead Council. He has been
awarded the Silver Beaver and the St. George emblem. Ed is a
past board member and past vice president of the American Cancer
Society, is trained in CPR, and was a speakers bureau member for
the American Heart Association, and a board member for Keep Older
People Employed.
The above demonstrate only part of the over four decades of ef-
fort and commitment Ed and Dolores as a couple to the development
to Maplewood, in the furthering of human rights and human, dignity
that this Human Rights Award represents. The Maplewood Human
Relations Commission and the Maplewood City Council are proud to
recognize Ed and Dolores O' Mara as reci pents of the first Human
Rights Award.
