MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING
Tuesday, December 8, 1987
5:30 p.m.
City Hall
PURPOSE OF SPECIAL MEETING
To make a recommendation to the Maplewood City Council on the
First Human Rights Award given in Maplewood.
Scott opened the meeting and gave a brief description of what he
thinks we should consider when we make our selection. "In a
voluntary sense devoted time and energy in the areas of human
rights that have an impact on the community as a whole."
Scott opened the floor for discussion of the nominees and the
information presented on each. Each member gave his/her thoughts
on the award itself and on the nominees.
A motion was made and seconded to not give the human rights award
this year, but wait until next year and do more publicity. Motion
was not passed.
A motion was made to not include Marla Rostron in the list of
nominees to honor her request, was seconded and passed.
Scott asked us to vote on a secret ballot for one of the remaining
nominees. Vote was taken and Ed O'Mara was selected.
A motion was made to recommend Ed O'Mara to the Maplewood City
Council as the recipient of the First Maplewood Human Rights
Award.
The recommendation will be presented at the December 28, 1987
meeting of the City Council. Scott will prepare a speech and
present it at the Council meeting.
Scott will also prepare letters to the other nominators. Mike
will check into a plaque to be award to Mr. O'Mara at the January
meeting of the Chamber of Commerce.
The first part of January the Commission will prepare information
for the press.
