Maplewood Human Relations Commission Business Meeting - November 1 , 1983 Present : Fischer , Eiden, Haynes , Williamson, Larsen Minutes for business meeting October 4 , 1983 accepted. Brochure : $40 . 00/thousand. Will be run on goldenrod with black print . Through the School District Print Shop . Membership : We have a vacancy. Send a letter to the Council notifying them of the opening. Put notice in Maplewood In Motion, and the "Eastsider" . Letter to Lucille accepting resignation with regrets and thanking her for efforts on both boards . Annual Report : Handed our items to Williamson for coordination. Will edit for next meeting. Bring back for us to look at . Larsen will make up attendance record. Appendices will include MHRC ordinances , accessibility study, by-laws ; no fault grievance program; HS education packet ; letter on familial housing; Disability legislation. Goals for 1984 - not in priority order 1 . Increasing Commission Visibility a. Press releases b. March of each year , updated insert in the MAPLEWOOD IN MOTION c . Formalize an activity(s) for INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF HUMAN RIGHTS and more specifically , December 9th and 10th celebrations of HUMAN RIGHTS DAY. c . Select a "press" officer during January officer elections . 2 . High School Education Packet a. Expand use of special presentation to groups outside the school system. b . Expand use of special presentation to other than Hill/Murray. c . Train other commissioners in special presentation procedure . 3 . Council/Staff Interaction a. Orientation meeting once a year. b . Copy them into monthly meetings and special information c. Appointment of staff liaison 4 . Workshops a. Hold a yearly workshop b . Involve the North Suburban HRCs in the workshop c . Use established HR related presentation groups 2-11/1/83 Business Meeting MHRC 5 . League of MN Human Rights Commissions a. Maintain active membership b. Have a Maplewoodite on board c. Avail ourselves of the educational workshops d. Promote HR legislation e . Support the HR Department f. Promote the establishment of local HR commissions 6. No Fault Grievance Procedure a. All Commissioners certified! b . Maintain strict confidentiality c. Support the Department of Human Rights in their effort to retain and expand the process . d. Publicize the service 7 . Accessibility Study (to Goals for 1985) 8 . Maintain active liaison with Maplewood HRA 9 . Maintain full complement of MHRCommissioners . 10 . Review goals quarterly 11 . Annual Report to Council January of each year. U. S. Civil Service Commission in jeopardy. Call should be made to congressional delegation. If not , a letter should be written. Haynes volunteered to follow thru. Discussion of Human Rights Day observance activity. Consensus -- too late ; will handle in fall of 1984 for proper observance during Interna- tional Human Rights Year. Haynes would see if the Maplewood State Bank would run an alert on the weekend of the 9th of December on their electric outdoor sign. Discussion of Martin Luther King birthday -- national observance . Will be coming up in bill form -- will support . Next meeting date December 6 , 1983 Maria Larsen Secretary
