HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/07/1988MINUTES ' MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 1988 PRESENT: John Prey Karla Sand Pat Williamson Sue Hoyt Sister Claire Lynch Mike McGuire, City Manager Gail Blackstone, Staff Servics Coordinator John Prey, President, called the meeting to order. Agenda was distributed. 1. Approval of Minutes - Minutes of the May 3, 1988 Human Relations Commission meeting were approved as submitted. 2. Old Business - No outstanding grievances. 3. New Business - a. Advertising - Human Rights Award - Commission needs to be ready to discuss advertising the Award at the September meeting. Suggestions for articles are the Maplewood in Motion and the Maplewood Review. Gail will prepare a notice for the Maplewood in Motion publication. The Commission will also discuss coordinating the event with the Chamber of Commerce and which month the award should be given. b. By-Laws (Copy was distributed with agenda) - Discussion of the By-laws will be a major discussion at the September meeting. The section on membership will be reviewed very carefully. c. 1988 Activities - Need to discuss how we can disseminate information on who people can contact about violations of their rights. The Maplewood in Motion is distributed to approximately 10,000 homes in Maplewood and is an excellent source of information as are posters in supermarkets, cable tv. Sister Claire will contact Mrs. Hughes about distributing information to the Hmong community. Our 1988 Goals included community awareness, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the By-laws. Included in the goals are specific activities. One of these is an Essay Contest. Sister Claire is working on this activity and will report a schedule and subject at the September meeting. 4. Reports a. John Prey - Advance no-fault training will be available in the fall. A State representative is available to attend our meetings and give us an update on the grievance procedure. Page 2 b. City Manager, the newly hired Staff Maplewood. She will Mike McGuire - Introduced Gail Blackstone Services Coordinator for the City of attend the Commission meetings as will Mike. c. Sue Hoyt - Explained that she is getting calls regarding the homeless in Maplewood and also for information on the food shelves. She said the numbers are not Iarge in Maplewood but there are occasional transients who need assistance. There is transportation available to the city where the shelters are located. The police may or may not transport them to a shelter. Mike will see that Sue gets the telephone number of NEST. Discussed the possibility of a food shelf in Maplewood; possibly downtown Maplewood which is in the Gladstone area. Meeting adjourned.
