MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATTONS COMMISSION
September 5, 1989

1. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
EXCUSED
Paul Sand
Motion was made, seconded and voted in favor of accepting
the June 6, 198g Minutes as presented.
2. UPDATE OF GRIEVANCES
One grievance was referred to Pat W. Pat was unable to contact
the grievant and he has not contacted her at this time.
Commission received a letter from the State Human Rights
Department asking the Commission to discontinue following
a case.
Karla was asked to contact the State Department and get
information on grievances that may have gone directly to the
State and which we may know nothing about.
3. OLD BUSINESS
A. ESSAY CONTEST
Carol presented a draft of the letter to be sent to the
principals inviting their students to participate in the
Essay Contest. The letter will go out the week of 9/18/89
and the essays are due in the principal's oifice by 11/1/89.
The award will be given on December 10. Recognition will
be given to the essayists, teachers and schools.
B. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Nominations for the award are due by October 31, 1989.
Gail will contact the Chamber about a joint project if
she doesn't hear irom them by October.
Dawn will submit press information to the newspapers on
the essay contest and the human rights award.

Commission will nominate Audrey Hughes for the League
oi Minnesota Human Rights Commissions award.
C. LEAGUE ANNUAL MEETING
The LMHRC Annual Meeting is scheduled for October 6-7
in St. Cloud. Karla and Pat will attend; Gail will submit
the applications.
Karla reported on the League's August meeting. Discussed
at this meeting were the City oi Minneapolis' open meeting
with the Police Department and the citizens; the racial
tensions in Roche�ter, MN; the Multi-culture Gender Fair
legislation; and the Asian Pacific offices in the State.
�. NEW BUSINESS
A. The State Department is sponsoring the Human Rights Day
event on December 10, 1989• Also Commissions are encouraged
to contact Commissioner Cooper about sponsoring a Human
Rights Day in their local communities. Pat will contact
Commissioner Cooper about having him present our Essay
Contest award.
B. New Brighton Commission is sponsoring an open house on
September 23, 9-12, at the Irondale High School.
C. Scott Rostron, Carolyn Peterson and possibly Gordon
Heininger will represent the Commission on the Ad Hoc
Committee for Seniors/�pecial Living Needs.
D. City of Maplewood Personnel Policies to be reviewed at
the October meeting.
E. Pat will review the discrimination complaint against the
C City and report at the October meeting.
F. Commission Budget - The original budget was 29 with
expenses ior postage and plaque bringing it t balance
oi $180. The League's registration of $50 will bring the
balance to $130.
G. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
H. Next meeting is scheduled for October 3, 1989
