1. CALL TO ORDER
Meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.
2. MINUTES
Motion was made, seconded and voted in favor of accepting the
Minutes of the September 5, 1989 meeting with the addition of
Gail Blackstone and Mike McGuire as attendees.
3• GRIEVANCES
Commission received a notice to discontinue followup on a grievaflce
case involving an American Indian person.
k. OLD BUSINESS
A. Essay Contest - Letters were mailed to the schools in Maplewood
regarding the.Essay Contest. Responses are due November 1, 1989•
News release was sent to the Maplewood Review and the Dispatch
and Tribune.
Pat W will send a letter of invitation to President Regan of the
Bank notif�ing him of the presentation date and time of the
award - December 14, 3:15 p.m. Commissioner Cooper of the
State Human Rights Department will be in attendance. Local
businesses and representatives from the local schools will
be invited to the presentation.
Sr. Claire and Carol will arrange to pick up the essays for
review at the November meeting.

B. Human Rights Award - Three nominees have been received for
this award. October 31 is the due date.
C. Discrimination Complaint - Pat is following up on a discrimination
complaint involving the City of Maplewood. She sent a letter
asking the complaintant to contact her; at this time Pat has
not been contacted. Pat will make another attempt to contact
this person.
5. NEW BUSINESS
A. Multi-Culture Education - Paul Sand reported on a project he
is involved with at this time. He is working with the Minneapolis
School District on a multi-cultuxe project involving 5 city
schools and 5 suburban schools in a 9 week project, bringing
lOth graders together for interaction.
Some of the suburban schools involved are: Roseville, Edina,
Richfield, Robbinsdale, Coon Rapids. Paul will contact Don
Hatfield of District 622 on its participation in this program.
A motion was made, seconded and voted in favor of having Pau1
contact schools about participation in the multi-culture
program.
B. Personnel Policies - Commission gave input to Mike and Gail on
the Personnel Policies for the City of Maplewood.
6. REPORTS
Mike reported on the remodeling to the City Hall building.
Commission discussed per diem for e�enses of commission members.
Gail distributed a handout on the southeast Asian refugees in
MN (demographic report).
7. ADJOURN
Meeting adjourned at approximately 9:00 p.m.
