Maplewood City Hall Present: Absent: Kar�la Sand Dawn Vassar Pat Williamson Sr. Claire Lynch Carol Engel Paul Sand Gail Blackstone Scott Rostron Mike McGuire I. CALL TO ORDER--7:10 P.M. A. The District 622 School Board did not send the anticipated re�resentative to our meeting. They have instead asked us to send a representative to their September 13 meeting. Dawn, Faul, and possibly Sr. Claire will attend. Our purp�se wi11 be to acquaint them with who we are, what we do, and our- goals. especially as they relate tG education. We will relay to t.hem our charge frorn the c i ty to estab 1 ish contact wi th theril �nc� express our availability. B. Aciditions to agend�: 1. Drugs--Red Ribbon Campaign 2. Iv'eed to know more about what is gaing on in the scho�ls re: r�xcial issues. II. MINUTES--Moti�n macle, seconded, and approved to accept as written. III.OLD BUSINESS A. Essay Cantest--It was decided that our past topics have �ieen t�o abstract and possibly gea2ed to the wr��ng grade level. This year the contest will be open to all ninth graders attendir�g a public or private school within the 622 School District. We will draft 2 or 3 scenarios from which the students can cho�se and ask 2 or 3 questions pertaining to each. We will cont.act the school fox� imput on topics and timing in an attempt to co�r- dinate this with the curriculum. Carol will contart Nor�h and Tartar�, I{arla will contact Mounds Park, Sr. Claire will cont.act Hill Murray and Scott will contact Kathy Huyen and District 6�2's MCGF committee. We will still attempt to have a due date af early November so that we may present the award on Hun�ar: Rights Day in December. B. Human Rights Day--Separate event fvr this year was tabled unless th�re is a pr�blem with the essay contest. C. Res�,or�se to Acts of Violence and Prejudice--Minnesota League of Human Rights Commissions n�w has a lett�r to ser�d a�_it to victims of these acts but. needs imput on local resources to which to refer people. By the next meeting each of us should 0 1 came up with one or two resources in Maplewaad whirh are willing to help in this kinc� of a situation. D. Special Obser�vances--It was decided that as a first step toward:� increasing awareness of t.hese observances, we will send a c��py of our, current annual report to each public dnd private school in Uistrict 622. A cover l�tter to tl-�e principals will mention Multicultural Gender Fair and pc,int out the enclased calendar of special observance dates. IV. NEW BUSINESS A. This year's state League conference will take place on October 13 and we have mc�ney in the budg�t of some commissian rnember-s to attend. Kar-la and Pat will ga. Paul is also attending and taking part in the program. B. In an attempt to f��us what we are going tv do in the area of education, Karla will talk to Mound's Par�k and Carol will talk with Weaver Elementary. �. Drags/Red Ribbon Campaign--We decided that this i� not r�ally within the scope of our commission's activiti�s. �/. RE�ORTS A. Seniors and Others With Special Living Needs--Scott and Mike repor,ted that the committee took tre summer aff but that the staff person is doing a good job. 1. FER--Scott reparted that the MCGF draft that he distri�utec� last spring pretty much spells out what was approved by the District 622 board on June 19, 1990. Scot.t expressed our willingness to help to that committee. C. MLHRC--Karla reported that the League is working on recommended legislatian for 1990. D. Mediation Training--Kar,la and Dawn are attending September 8. E. Grievances--We have a new age discriminati�n gr�ievance. We will now send quar�terly reports on our activities to the city council. F. ��ity of Maplewo�d--Gail passed around c�pies of the Minnesota St.ate Council on Disabilities Report, the Ur�ban League Repor,t, and the City of Maplewaod's Annual Report. Because of Election Day, aur November meeting will be on the 13th. VI. AUJOURN--8:50 PM
