I. CALL T� ORDER--7 P.M.
District 622 School Boarc� members Lillian Johnsan an�l Chuck
Wiger were intruduced by Chair Sand. Following a short overview
�f the Commission's functions, Johnson and Wiger responded t�
questions from commission members. Lil Johnson stated tr�at ther�a
waa a presentation to facalty and staff at. the beginning of the
cuurent school year on multicultural issues. There are r�o
further inservice worksha�s curr,ently planned on Multucultural/
Gencler Fair issues for this year but she feels that
ane will probably be held if money permits. These issues are
�eing dealt with in the curriculum on an ongoing basis. Hirir�g
ir�inority staff inembers is a real problem in that less than 5i of
all act.ive teachers are people af color and they are much in
clemar:d. The 62� Board has asked the adrninistratian to flesh out
the Multicultural/Gender Fair objectives arl�pt�d September 13.
John�on gave t.�s a copy of her nates froni the S�ptember- 27 meeting
entitiled "Desegregation/Integratiun in this Decade." (Gaii will
distribute copies itz November.)
Wiger askad if t.here i�, a clearinghouse far human rights
�:onvn�xnity outr�each mdt.eriais. In response to a question about
rac� relations in t7ze �chools, they rneiZtioned tlze fights at Nor�tl�
and ifzcident at John G1enn but stated th�t "we don't always hear
everything." (Also see New Business below.)

A. Essay Cantest--The C�mm;.ssion approved the draft of the
materials fvr the essay cont�:�t with the words "civil rigl�ts"
changed to "h;.�man rigt-�ts" . Carol wi 11 pick up the essays on
N�vemb�r, 9. We will judgE Pr�tries at November meeting.
B. Human Rights Award---Nomination form will ap�ear in the
Maplew�od in Motian due out in late Octaber. rail will send
infari7la�.ion ta local newspapers. Ent.ries ar� due in late
November and Gail will make cc�ies for our Uecember me�t.inr�.
C. Respon�e to Acts af Violence and Pr,eJudice--We will try
again to find community resources for next month's meetitzg. Ni��:r;
a!zd Gai i wi 11 chec;c with th� pol ice departrnent .
D. `:pecial Observances--Lil Johnson said t.hat she thinks a
l�ng list of these would averwhelm the teachers as the curriculum
is so prescribed.
IV. NEW BUSINESS
A. �cott stated that an out of state rnale student had
recently corn� tv him for help after being expelled from Narth
High for reasons Scott would questian. Scott wanteci to know if
the �listr�ict had an oL�ligation to st.udents over 18. Johns��n
statel that the district's responsibility now goes to age 21 and
beyond. She mentioned the Alternative Schoc,I recently opened in
r�osevill� in which District 622 participates. (5�J or 55 f�rmer
distr-ict students have enrc�lled there.j Noith's student handbook
sh:�ul�. have informatic�n on possible recourse. Scott will pursue.

C, City of Maplewood--Gail distributed a handout on the
propers�d Pamsey County Cizarter. She described the city's
participation in the September 27 Minority Jvb F�ir.
D. Grievances--Four new ones rereiv�d but all w�re r�r_alled
by the stdt� befare action r_�uld be taken.
