DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD/CITY OF MAPLEWOOD UMAN RIGHTS DAY
Commissioners discussed their contacts with Maplewood schools.
Gail reported that Mayor Bastian expressed interest in the
Commission's award plans and was pleased that we are using his
concept of a Maplewood Human Rights Day. Gail will keep him
informed as to our progress and will arrange for his participation
at the award ceremony. Dawn will submit a brief article about the
award to District 622 News by September lOth. Karla will ask
Jim Garrett about a speaker to address a topic useful to educators
on that date, January 15. Articles might be submitted to the
Maplewood Review before and after this event. The Commission may
prepare a proclamation for the Mayor to sign, declaring January 15
to be Maplewood's Human Rights Day. Information about this event
and speaker are planned for the January-February issue of
Maplewood in Motion, so must be submitted by the end of November.
HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Commissioners discussed presenting the annual Human Rights Award
in May. This would require a submission by the end of January to
Maplewood in Motion for the March-April issue. March 30 will be
the deadline for nominations. Commissioners will decide on a
winner at the April, 1992, meeting. Gail will check with the
scheduled luncheons of the Chamber of Commerce for presentation.

A. LEAGUE OF MINNESOTA HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
At the League's last meeting, it was decided to ask for police
support in following up on recent shootings of gay individuals.
The conference being planned will celebrate the 20th anniversary

to attend. Karla was part of a team which met with the new
commissioner of Human Rights, Beaulieu, who will personally meet
the League, rather than send a representative.

distributed.

Maplewood for sexual harassment. The Minnesota Department of
