The minutes of September 3, 1991, were moved, seconded, and approved. Agenda for tonight was approved. A. DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD James is contacting Dr. Rosa Smith, an educator, to be keynote speaker for the awards ceremony on January 15. The Commission discussed having this ceremony in late afternoon on that date, tentatively from 4:00-6:00 p.m.; speaker may speak for approximately 20 minutes. For the ceremony, James may introduce the speaker, Mayor may speak first, and award may be presented following the speaker. The ceremony will be publicized in the newspapers and in the schools; Council members will be invited to attend. Gordon spoke of how schools have lost application packets and stressed importance of personal contact. We discussed our work in contacting various schools to encourage their participation. B. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD The Chamber of Commerce now meets quarterly, not monthly. The May meeting combines communities; it is not exclusively a Maplewood function. Because of this, the Commission considered moving up the date of the Human Rights Award to an earlier month. Rotary Club, Jaycees, and Junior Chamber of Commerce were also discussed _ ,. HRC Minutes 10/O1/91 Page Two B.
