Call to Order MINUTES MAPLEWC)OD Hi�1AN RFLATIONS COMMISSION Ztzesday, December 3, 1991 7:00 PM Maplewood City Hall Mapleti�od Rocan ABSENT Gordon Heininger Sister Claire Lynch, O.S.B. Pat Williamson The meeting of the Maplewood H�i Relations C�ission was called to order at 7:05 PM, on Dece.mber 3, 1991, by Karla Sand, Chair. II. Minutes 'i'he minutes of Nov�r 12, 1991, were amended in two places to indicate reference to N'.aplewood in Motion, not Maplewood Review (once under Diversity Awareness Award, once under H�nan Rights Award). Thus amended, the minutes were moved, seconded, and approved. III. Old Business A. DIVERSI:Y AWARENESS AWARD Five applications were received for the Diversity Awareness Award. The following schools in Maplewood applied: Cazver El�nentary, Weaver Ele- mentary, Hill Murray High School, Niounds Park Academy, and 'IYansfiguration Church School. Gail contacted Premier Bank to confinn their financial support for the award. The Cce�rtnission was urged to fonnalize its request for the $500, specifying the date of the award present.ation, in a letter to the bank. Karla will contact the editor of the Maplewood Review, stating that, in recognition of December 10 (International Human Rights Day) ,'the Cotrrt:iis- sion selected a winner of the Diversity Awareness Award and that the award would be presented on January 15 (Maplewaod's Ht4nan Rights Day). James will send a fornial letter to Dr. Rosa 57nith to confixm her role as keynote speaker at the cererlony on Januazy 15, which will take place between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Other ccxtanunications which need to be made were discussed: letters to the award winner and all applicants, inviting them to attend the Maplewood Htunan Rights Day program and presentation of the award at City Hall. Gail added that entire schools should be invited, and Dawn suggested that, if the winner is a District 622 school, its Board of Education should be notified. At the next meeting, C�issioners will plan the aqenda for the Maplewood H�1 Rights Day program and award presentation. B . HUM�.'V RIGHTS AWARD Plans are to give the HLm�an Rights Award in April, 1992. Cca�ussioners examined the award nzles and approved of them. Deadline for su}amitting HRC Minutes 12/3/91 Page Ztao ncani.nations was set for March 6, 1992. The Cca�mission will change its meeting date to March 10 for that month. Rules for nca�unating candi- dates for the Maplewoo� Htmian Rights Award will appear in the Februaxy issue of Maple�aood in Motion. N. New Business A. Coalition Karla reported on a program which she attended in Roseville, which ad- dressed the issue of hate crimes. About forty people attended this program, sponsored by a coalition of Htunan Rights Carmissions. B. International Htunan Rights Day Karla shawed a flyer announcing the annual H�nan Rights Day Program of the Minnesota Depart7nent of H�unan Rights . C. Vacancy Conanissioners read an application to fill the vacancy on the Maplewood Human Relations Cca�nission, and will recc�mend Lori Surma, the applicant, to the position at the n�t meeting of the City Council. V. Reports A. League of Minnesota Htanan Rights Cor.IInissions Karla reported on the consideration which the Minnesota Departrnent of H�i Rights is making of the amount of responsibility local Ccaianissions will have in �diati.ng grievance cases. B. City Of Md1�lEWOOC� Mike reported on the meeting of Maplewood Seniors and Others with Special Needs, which he and Gordon attended. C. Grievances James discussed his attem�ts to contact individuals at Goodyear Tire, concerning the grievance case on which he and Karla are working. D. Other Gail showed the artist's rendering for the Januazy, 1992, Maplewood in Nlotion . VI. Adjourrunent The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM, with Catmussioners going into S�ecial Session to select a wi.nner of the Diversity Awareness Award.
