I. Call to Order

The meeting of the Maplewood Human Relations Commission was called to order at
7:15 p.m., on January 7, 1992, by Karla Sand, Chair.
II. Minutes
The minutes of the December 3, 1991, meeting of the Maplewood Human Relations
Commission were moved, seconded, and approved.
III. Old Business

DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD
Diversity Awareness Award letters to Premier Bank, and to all schools which
applied for the award were sent. Press releases were sent to Woman's Press,
Insight, Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, and Maplewood Review
newspapers, and many flyers were distributed.
Discussion was made of the agenda for the Human Rights Day program.
Dawn will prepare an information sheet for the press that attends the program.
Commissioners will contact all schools which submitted plans to determine if
they will do presentations of their plans at the program, and will distribute
more flyers.
B. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Announcement that applications are being sought will appear in the February
1992, Maplewood in Motion. Gail will also contact Maplewood Review and St.
Paul Pioneer Press regarding this announcement. The deadline for applications
will be March 6. Presentation of the award will be done at the April 23
meeting of the Suburban Area Chamber of Commerce.
IV. New Business
A. Coalition Effort
Discussion was made of what other commissions are doing.
B. Election of Officers
Karla was re-elected as Chair, Dawn will serve as Vice Chair, and Gordon was
elected Secretary.
V. Reports
A. League
The process for dealing with no-fault grievance cases has changed; such cases
will be turned over to State Bureau of Mediation Services.
Tl�e plans for this new year include focusing on hate-bias legislation.
B. City of Maplewood
Gail presented 1992 goals of the Planning Commission because they include a
human rights goal. Commissioners examined and discussed the wording and
will bring proposed changes to the next meeting.
C. Grievances
There are none at this time.
D. Other
1. Two new applications have been received for vacancies on the
Maplewood Human Relations Commission.

Pat will call Lori Surma who was a�prebed last month for a position on
Maplewood Human Relation Commission.
2. Gail received a call from an individual from West Hennepin Human
Services, who is doing a survey of what cities are doing to develop
human rights commission.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:42 p.m. The next meeting: February 4, 1992.
