I. Call to Order

The meeting of the Maplewood Human Relations Commission was called to order at
7:15 p.m., on May 5, 1992, by Karla Sand, Chair.
II. Minutes
Minutes of the April 9, 1992 meeting were approved as written.
III. Old Business
A. Human Rights Award
Suburban Chamber of Commerce can present plaque at their meeting if we decide to
do it this way. Mike suggested presenting the Human Rights Award next year at the
same time as the Maplewood City Hall Open House. Marilyn Vars will receive the
Maplewood Human Rights Award in August at the Suburban Chamber of Commerce
meeting, date yet to be decided. The program will be further planned at the June
meeting of the Council.
B. Maplewood Human Rights Day
Karla reported on her meeting with the Eden Prairie Human Relations Commission.
Well organized with much long-range planning taking a lot of time for all concerned.
Seems to be long-range undertaking. It was suggested that we use the Puppet Wagon
to show diversity awareness, an apen house, or sandwiches and popcorn to bring more
people in.
C. Joint Efforts
No action taken by Karla.
D. Resolution (NEST)
Presented to the Council. Funding for NEST was approved 4 to 1 for this hear.
IV. New Business
A. Department of Human Rights Letter
Discussion of the Department of Human Rights letter was undertaken, and activities
and projects as suggested by the MN Department of Human Rights were also
discussed and suggestions that we select one or two activities to follow through on for
the coming year.
B. School District Project
General discussion regarding possible joint efforts with schools.
V. Reports
A. League of MN Human Rights Commission
Pat Williamson reported they want to change the date of the next meeting. Legislative
committee want to raise funds for a lobbying effort. Training for no-fault grievance
will be limited to two people from each commission.
B. City of Maplewood
Asking for suggestions for speakers at the next conference. Gail passed out new
annual reports of the Human Relations Commission, Financial Report for the City of
Maplewood and population notes.
C. Grievances
No grievances.
D. Other
