MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER

APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Motion to approve with minor conections by Jim
Ganett, seconded by and Gordon.
Ayes - all
III. OLD BUSINESS
A. Business Outreach Letters - The Commission reviewed applications from
three businesses and made minor suggestions for changes. Pat will be
drafting letters to the businesses addressing those suggestions.
B. Acts of Bias/Prejudice - Responding to an act of bias/prejudice should be the
phrase used instead of a hate crimes - commission members will provide
input to develop a response network at the next meeting.
C. Lea�ue of MN Human Ri�hts Campaign - Pat - Called several commissions
to see if they wanted to co-host a meeting - New Brighton, Roseville, and
Falcon Heights might be interested in co-hosting; purpose to interest new
cities in forming their own commissions. Dates suggested were the 2nd &
4th Tuesday or Thursday of June.
D. Commission Vacancv - Ad in paper and several calls - no applications
returned as of yet.
E. Maplewood Onen House - We will be first on awards program to present
Diversity Award at 8:30 p.m. on that day. Letter to bank so they can be
there to present check. Key chains will be available the week before the
Open House scheduled for May 11 between 5:00 & 8:00 p.m. Need
Commission members there to hand out information and key chains. Jim
will check if he can get a computer-generated banner with Commission
name. Arrangements will be finalized at the next meeting.
F. Diversitv Awareness Award - applications were reviewed, and the consensus
of the Commission was to give the award to Mounds Park Academv
IV. NEW BUSINESS - none
V. REPORTS
A. League of MN Human Rights Commission (see office memorandum
attached).
B. City of Maplewood - See copy of inemorandum to Chief Collins from Gail
Blackstone re: Response to Acts of Bias and Prejudice. Also list of Human
Relation Commission members and their terms were handed out.
Internship program brought up by Karla for NW suburbs, funded by NW
Hennepin Human Seivices Council. Pays tuition, some funds for living
expenses and money for city to provide job, i.e. cadet. Karla to contact
F�cecutive Director, Patti Wilder, for more information and possible Ramsey
County program.
C. Grievances - One referral from the State alleging age discrimination. Pat
will do a follow up.
