The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm by chair, Gordy Heininger_ A motion to approve Lhe agenda was moved_ A request to an addition was made and approved. The motion to approve the agenda as amended was seconded a.nd pas.sed. A motion ta approve the mimrtes was moved, seconded and passed_ Oid Business A 12Eca� ofToiniMeeting inApril: Members made commems about items discussed_ Marie 1�7ced the logo contes� but had concerns about using loc�l c�ble access. Mauy people don`t have cable and tlae quality of same progazns is poor. If the sound is poor, rt would be very diffcult for those with hearing impauments to under�~tand it a.nd none of t1�e prog�ns are made with interpreters. Gordy l�ed the idea of an award to business. Other comments included that it was difficult �or us to conduct our own business; we should consider �avmg a youth representative on our commission; and tI�a.t there wasn`t much excitemeut for a community evelxt. Gordy w�I send a�ollow up letter to those who attended thanIflng them for pariic►pating. B. Commur�ity eve-rrt: Regina reported t�at the Coalition ofEast Metro Community Centers has approached 1VI�n�ed Blood Theater about a performance for their employees and usin� the Maplewood Community Center. 7,'hey would have four performances, one of wluch would be offered to the pub�ic. We could sponsor a discussion and/or reception. September dates (between the 18th and 21 st) are being considerecl Our costs would be for the reception and a sign language interpreter. We could use chaz�table gambling monies for the cost of the theater. Regina will get the name of the contact at the commuuity center for Sheme. We hope to learn more at next morrth's meetin� C. Apple Yalley �igh School video: We wouId he able ta use's on cable a�ccess channei with sonne restrictions_ There are concerns of audio and Iighting quality and lycics of some of the songs and co�ate� of the progam may be offensive. Awco�ds presentations: There was some last minute confusior� but the certificates were completed for the Presentation awards ceremony_ Marie thanlced Maria for getting them done. Ttie checks wiIl be s�errt oux laxer but the ch�dren really enjoyed it. Gordy, Carol and Mayor Crary Bastian attended the Mounds Park ceremony. They had a very colorfuI and exciting eveut scheduled where many students dressed in costumes from their native couu�ies_ The Ia1y Suburban paper was there and the bank representative preserrted the school with an over-sized checic A picture was taken ofthis. Certificates for the posiers were not g.ven out as there will be another ceremony. 1Vlaria w1i get those certs completed_ New Business A. Op�n hvuse: The city w71 sponsor open house on Aug. 6, which is also TTational Nght Out', from 5-8 pru. There will be a variety of activities: police dog demonstrations, b�e rodeo, DARE office�s, ambulance, helicopter, fire department, self defense, child ID kit, '�eddy Bear ban� The city will have an inforu�fion booth and the coxnmunity center w� offer tours and have a dunlang booth with city officials as the targets. The cit�s restaura_uts have been asked to participate aad bo4ths wi11 be set up between city hall and the commimity center. Discussion as to whai we should do led to the su�estion by Crordy thai we ask the Mounds Park students to attend in their costttmes. He will cont.act tlie faculty acivisor for their diversity �-oup about this_ Milce added that the city w�I have a booth at the Ramsey County Fair, 7uIy 17-21. The booth needs to be staffed for 40 hours which w�71 be divided inio 2-3 hour shifts. They will need about two doz.�n people. HRC members are to consider vol�m�teer�g. B. Interview guidelines for new members: A suggestion was made to add a line in the application about meeting comrnitment for explanation from candidates_ We lool:ed through suggestions made by Lmd� and Maria. We decided that whent we have an opening we w�1I formalize the process_ C_ Mul�icultural iraining in District 62?: Linda reported that all employees in the school district w�71 attend braining beginning in the fall. �Tarvep Bariz wiIl fa�.'ilitate_ Other Basiness The city council ofOakdale has decided to not re-establish their humar� relations commic�;on. Gordy and Lynne were conta,cted by the Lt�y Suburban paper on this. Gordy w�l g�t a copy of t�e article_ Re�ina reported that the M�ed Blood Theater is presenting a program on discrimination becan.se of poverty in three sites around the state_ Rosev�le is one of the sites. US-:��:►6 16:07 F:1T 61� "1r' 1�::1 Labat• � Industr•�- �����-� The old Lions hali is being converted to a funeral home that w�l predominantly serve the F�mong community_ We sa�ested that the L�y paper be contacted to interview the owners_ R.eports City of Ma�Iewood: Two city council members' homes have been the site of vandali.sm which included spray paiating a swa.st�a on a garage door and spray pai.irting on a car. One ofthe parks was also hit with vandali,Sm where racist comments were pai.nted on a wa1L The counc� relz-eat resulted iu a summary of seven outcome goals for 1997_ A.genda for the ueat meeting-: �e neat meeting �1I be Tues., June 4.
