June 1, 1999 Meeting
Minutes
PRESENT -Members: Donna Brown, Carol Cude, Gordon Heininger, Cheryl
Johnson, Katie Thein Kimlinger, Regina Laroche-Theune, Barbara Skoglund.
Ex -officio: Colleen Dirkswager. Guests: Scott Fearing & Cami Fischer, Outfront
Minnesota.
Call to Order: 7:05 p.m. by Gordy Heininger.
Approval of Agenda: Agenda was altered to allow 'Call to Order' before
'Inservice', then approved.
III. Inservice: Scott Fearing, assisted by Cami Fischer, led an informational training
meeting/discussion on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. It was
agreed this session required more than an hour for completion!
IV. Approval of Minutes: To be approved next meeting, September 7, 1999.
V. Old Business:
A. Review "Inside Insight" -- after some discussion it was requested that
HRC members able to tape a segment of the cable program do so.
B. 'National Night Out' Schedule -- All available commission members are
to be present 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.. 5:30 - 6:00 p.m., kids music by the
'Alphabets'; 6:00 p.m., presentation of the Maplewood Award; 6:30- 8:30
p.m., music by 'Bomba' latin dance band.
C. 'Violence Free Families Initiative' Upcoming Meeting -- There will be
meetings over the summer with the 'Initiative' staff to plan a public fall
event including building a community quilt and peace themes.
D. ADA Discussion --There will be a fall morning training session for local
business to learn more about ADA.
VI. New Business:
A. Discriminatory Call - Graffiti at Joy Park -- Cheryl agreed to submit an
article to "Maplewood in Motion" in response to the incident. The
commission discussed the idea of having a regular HRC update corner in
the Maplewood in Motion (possible title: "Do You Have Your Head in the
Sand?").
B. Discrimnatory Letter -- The commission reviewed and discussed the
letter. Colleen reported that the City had attempted to follow up on the
complaint, but the complainant had not enclosed their name or number.
In calling the number included in the letter, the realtor the letter
complained about was reached and informed of the complaint.
VII. Reports: None.
VIII. NEXT MEETING: 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 7, 1999(Dinner included!).
