HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/05/1999Maplewood Human Relations Commission October 5, 1999 Minutes Present members: Gordy Heininger, Regina Laroche-Theune, Carol Cude, Donna Brown Ex -Officio: Colleen Dirkswager, Mike McGuire. I. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Chair Gordon Heininger. II. Approval of Minutes: Peachful should be corrected to say peaceful. It was moved, seconded and passed that September meeting Minutes be approved with corrections. III. Approval of Agenda: Agenda was amended to reflect additions: Old Business by adding D. Diversity Contest/Planning and Scheduling and New Business by adding C. Next Meeting It was moved, seconded, and passed that -agenda be approved with additions. IV. Old Business A. "Inside Insight"; Reviewed excerpts of a taped segment on the quality of Maplewood's Primary Election, negative comments regarding current Compost Site and New Homeless Shelter. It was agreed that the quality of the program was very poor and that the agenda and content of the program was controlled with "ringers" being interviewed and/or phoning in responses. At this point, there is no action to be taken by Commission. B. Violence Free Families Initiative: Quilters have been lined up; JoAnn Fabric has agreed to provide fabric for quilts at a discount. Bahai Youth has canceled for their scheduled performance. Commission members agreed on schedule to participate in success of project. Donna Brown volunteered to cut squares; Regina volunteered to help and will bring in additional fabric she has on hand. A motion was made, seconded, and passed to spend up to an additional $150 for supplies. C. Display Update: In the process of collecting pictures to display. There is a need for three, 8x 10" pictures to define a yet undecided theme. D. Diversity Contest Planning/Scheduling: Letter to go out with November Agenda. Contest rules need to be finalized. It was decided to continue with the format of prior years for this year to wait until next year to enter a winner in the State contest. V. New Business A. ADA Training Feedback from WABABA: Discussion to be tabled until next meeting. Maplewood Human Relations Commission October 5, 1999 - Minutes Page 2 B. Brainstorm Topics for HRC Corner in Maplewood in Motion: To be added to next month's agenda. Colleen to bring calendar and members to bring ideas for columns. Each member to contribute one or two times with different feature topics (which may be changed dependent upon happenings within Maplewood's boundaries that may need to be addressed.) C. Next Meeting: November's meeting will be changed from Election Day, November 2 to November 3, 1999 at the regular time 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room A. VI. Reports A. The Edgerton shooting suspects were apprehended. In reference to the Cub shooting, the suspect received a prison term. B. Referendums were discussed for the upcoming election. C. The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a Candidate Forum on the 14th of October. VII.
