ENVIRONMENTAL AND NATURAL RESOURCES COMMISSION

1. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Environmental and Natural Resources Commission was called to order at 7:10
p.m. by Chair Palzer.
2. ROLL CALL

3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Buttleman moved to approve the agenda as submitted.
Seconded by Commissioner Ries. Ayes – All
The motion passed.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chair Palzer asked staff if Kevin Berglund was speaking as a resident or as a position on the
Citizen Reporter. Staff said the change would be made to 8. b. iii. changing Citizen Reporter to
Maplewood resident.
Commissioner Ries moved to approve the September 18, 2017, Environmental and Natural
Resources Commission meeting minutes as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Buttleman. Ayes – Chair Palzer,
Commissioner’s Buttleman,
Redmond, Ries & Sinn
Abstention – Commissioner’s Miller,
& Okeson
The motion passed.

5. NEW BUSINESS
a. New Member Orientation: Planner, Shann Finwall reviewed the new member orientation
and introduced the newest Commissioner, Candace Okeson, to the ENR Commission.
Candace was appointed to the Commission on September 11, 2017, by the city council.
Staff welcomed Candace to the Commission.
6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
a. Comp Plan 2040
Natural Resources Chapter: Ginny Gaynor, Natural Resources Coordinator, discussed
the draft 2040 Comp Plan Natural Resources Chapter and answered questions of the
Commission.
Resilience Chapter: Shann Finwall, Environmental Planner, discussed the draft 2040
Comp Plan Resilience Chapter and answered questions of the Commission.
The draft chapters will go to the Comp Plan Steering Committee for their review in
November.
7. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS
None present.
8. COMMISSION PRESENTATIONS
None.
9. STAFF PRESENTATIONS
a. Fall Clean Up Campaign – Four Weeks in October
i. Environmental Planner, Shann Finwall discussed the fall clean-up campaign for
the month of October. Republic Services can be reached at 651-455-8634 to
schedule that service.
b. Update on the City-Wide Trash and Recycling Contract
i. Environmental Planner, Shann Finwall gave an update on the City-Wide Trash and
Recycling Contract. The city council approved the contract extension for trash with
Republic Services and the recycling contract extension with Tennis Sanitation
ending in 2019. After that it will have to go out for an RFP and next year the ENR
commission will be looking at the RFP process for this.
c. Maplewood Nature Center Programs
i. Environmental Planner, Shann Finwall presented the upcoming Nature Center
Programs. For more information contact the Maplewood Nature Center at (651)
249-2170.
