Volunteers help with community planting at Sherwood Park in 2006. r IFr _ r_ Summer is here! What a great time to use one of our many beautiful parks or neighborhood preserves! What is it about Maplewood that makes our City so attractive to so many? Undoubtedly it is the complementary patchwork of our historic heritage, the natural beauty of our community, the abundance of activities, the wealth of employment opportunities, the housing options, and our vast recreational resources. During its 50th anniversary, the City of Maplewood is the proud host for special events throughout the year. Our parks and neighborhood preserves serve as the backdrop for a variety of these events. On June 13, bring the family to the Bruentrup Farm off of County Road D from 6:00- 8:30 pm for an old time ice cream social. On June 14, come and tempt your taste buds at the Taste of Maplewood being held right on our City campus. Recently, I had the wonderful privilege and honor of participating in the Spring Tea hosted by the Maplewood Area Historical Society at the Bruentrup Farm on May 12, 2007. After an extensive selection process, the Historical Society selected 12 Notable Women of Maplewood ". This list of 12 notable women included Sarah Wakefield who lived with the Indians after being kidnapped, Olympics athlete Amy Peterson, Alice Recktenwald Cook our fir: Ms. Maplewood" in 1962, Char Wasiluk, Lucille Aurelieus, Lorraine Fische Terry Stanke, Dorothy Hejny, Donna Funk Rose Auger and Fran Juker. Imagine my surprise in "making the cut" and being selected as the 12th notable woman on that list. Needless to say, it was a humbling experience to be in the compar of these great women of our community who have given so much of themselves tc make Maplewood what we are today. The commitment and accomplishments of these notable women stand in testament t a fundamental value which is woven throughout our community's heritage. This Lundamental value of commitment to the community is shared and embraced by our many citizens who volunteer their tin - and talents, for the benefit of our community, on our City's Boards and Commissions as they plan, discuss, and provide advice on issues related to public policy initiatives for our community. The Parks and Recreation Commission an the new Environmental and Natural Resources Commission are two of our commissions composed of such communii volunteers. These two citizen commissions are dedicated to preserving and maintaining Maplewood's neighborhood preserves, parks and trails so that Maplewood continues its time honored tradition of being an environmentally healthy, beautiful and unique place to live, work and visit. In addition to open space initiatives, our new Environmental and Natural Resources Commission specifically addresses measures to 1.) reduce litter; 2.) eliminate graffiti; 3.) promote recycling practices to children as well as adults and businesses; 4.) protect our lakes from phosphate runoff; and 5.) "beef up" wetland protection in Maplewood. If a park and recreation activity is of interest to you, come, visit "e Recreation" on the City's web site at www.ci.moplewood.us.mn where you can sign up for recreation activities online. It's simple, just click on the e Recreation Quick Link under Park and Rec in the lower right hand corner and see if there isn't some activity or sport that might pique your interest. Enjoy your summer - see you and your family at the parks. As always, I welcome one and all to attend the monthly Citizen's Forum hosted by the Mayor, held the first Saturday of each month, at Maplewood City Hall in the Maplewood Room from 10:00 a.m. to noon, to call me at (65 1) 774^1490 or to send an email to mayorlongrie@yahoo.com. TWI am proud to announce that I have been nstrumental in bringing a business to Maplewood. Wipers Recycling, an environmental manufacturing business has made a move to Maplewood and will be hiring around 300+ people in the next couple of years. The owner, Patti Gearin, holds a patent on a product used to absorb chemical /oil spills. This product is also used for cleaning ground contamination and she has generously offered to use the Gladstone Savannah as a clean -up test site. Her patented material will be mixed into the soil to absorb the contamination and then biodegrades and restores the earth to its natural state. This kind of initiative is one of the actions needed to; improve housing sales, stimulate economic growth, and boost the tax revenue for the City of Maplewood. I am also working with multiple other businesses to implement a business plan for them to relocate to Maplewood. I strongly believe as a council member, it is an important part of our job to promote the economic growth of our city. The South Maplewood Moratorium —the research is going full speed ahead with Rose Lorsung in the lead. Rose is our planning consultant hired for the project by the City of Maplewood. She held a meeting at Carver School and introduced a wealth of information about the area, held a question and answers session for the neighborhood, and produced several informational maps. (All on our website). There was a large group of dedicated citizens from Maplewood who attended and made the meeting a huge success. We started another initiative this Spring — Conservation Easements. I urge all of our citizens to get involved by requesting more information, attending meetings and helping protecting Maplewood's Parks and Public Open Spaces from being sold into future development. Minnesota Land Trust will be taking lead on this pilot project and will bring forth a proposal for the first phase, protection of Public Open Spaces soon. I strongly support Conservation Easements to protect our Open Spaces for the benefit of all Maplewood Citizens. You may ask, what is a CERT program? Natural and human - caused disasters strike Minnesota communities each year. Events range from industrial and hazardous material incidents to floods, fires, tornadoes and seasonal storms. If a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community's professional response, CERT members can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills they learned during training. These skills can help save and sustain lives until help arrives. CERT promotes a partnership between emergency services and the people they serve. Emergency personnel train members of neighborhoods, community organizations and workplaces in basic response skills and then integrate the trained CERT members into the emergency response capability for their area. If you are 18 years of age or older and are interested in becoming a CERT member, join us for an information meeting Thursday, August 23 at 7:00 pm at Maplewood Fire Station #2, 1 955 Clarence Street. For more information, contact Robert Dollerschell, Emergency Management Deputy Management Director at 651. 249.2882 or visit www.citizencorps.gov /cert/ Pictured from left to right are Rep. Dave Olson, Mike Parrish, EMSRB Chair, Robb Prechtel, Maplewood Emergency Medical Services Director, Rep. Frank Moe and Senator Paul Koering. While the community gets work done, the work crew members develop good work habits, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to the community. ", says Chris Belfield, Offender Workforce Development Coordinator. In April, Maplewood had a Ramsey County Correctional Facility crew help with a restoration project at Kohlman Creek Neighborhood Preserve. The crew hauled and piled brush, clearing the area to prepare it for seeding savanna grasses and wildflowers. They also lined a new trail with large logs from the site. In addition to service projects, Maplewood takes advantage of products produced by the correctional facility, especially plants, mulch, and erosion control material. Maplewood Police Officer William Sypniewski was awarded the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association Medal of Honor and was presented with his award at the Association's Executive Training Institute Annual Awards Banquet on April 18, 2007. Officer Sypniewski was recognized for his handling of a house fire call on March 24, 2006. After observing the house to be on fire, he escorted the combative occupant out of the home and went back into the burning house to look for any other occupants, not leaving until he was driven out by extensive smoke and the collapsing roof. Officer Sypniewski's efforts in saving the life of the resident and jeopardizing his own safety to reenter the bum in g house were cited as reasons for his winning the Medal of Honor. This was good news to the City of Maplewood, which had used crews in past years for everything from mulching v`rain gardens to pulling spotted knapweed and piling PHOTO - compost pillow installation. Maplewood staff members install brush at the Maplewoodcompostpillowstostabilizeshorelineonacitystormpond. Neighborhood Preserves. The service program took a three -year hiatus. In its new form, cities and agencies pay a fee to cover the costs of administration and a crew supervisor. Everyone wins with this program. These are only available for use on public projects.
