A. DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD/CITY OF MAPLEWOOD UMAN RIGHTS DAY
Commissioners discussed their contacts with Maplewood schools.
Gail reported that Mayor Bastian expressed interest in the
Commission's award plans and was pleased that we are using his
concept of a Maplewood Human Rights Day. Gail will keep him
informed as to our progress and will arrange for his participation
at the award ceremony. Dawn will submit a brief article about the
award to District 622 News by September 10th. Karla will ask
Jim Garrett about a speaker to address a topic useful to educators
on that date, January 15. Articles might be submitted to the
Maplewood Review before and after this event. The Commission may
prepare a proclamation for the Mayor to sign, declaring January 15
to be Maplewood's Human Rights Day. Information about this event
and speaker are planned for the January-February issue of
Maplewood in Motion, so must be submitted by the end of November.
B. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Commissioners discussed presenting the annual Human Rights Award
in May. This would require a submission by the end of January to
Maplewood in Motion for the March-April issue. March 30 will be
the deadline for nominations. Commissioners will decide on a
winner at the April , 1992, meeting. Gail will check with the
scheduled luncheons of the Chamber of Commerce for presentation.

of the League. Karla, Pat, Sister Claire, and Jim are registered
to attend. Karla was part of a team which met with the new
commissioner of Human Rights, Beaulieu, who will personally meet
the League, rather than send a representative.

distributed.

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION
CONFIRMATION OF REFERRAL
REF: N109
ADR SERVICE: Maplewood Human Rights Commission, c/o Gail Blackstone, 770-4527
Charging Party: Edward Urhammer Employer: Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
Phone: 464-7055 Representative: Harold Barker
422-8025
Phone: 924-4563
The Charging Party's dispute with the Respondent is outlined below. This
matter appears to come within the statutory authority of the Minnesota
Department of Human Rights, but the department has taken no position on the
merits of the complaint.
Mr. Urhammer believes that his work was unfairly evaluated and unreasonable
standards were set for him in an effort to force him to resign or to
justify his demotion, and that the motive for this treatment is his age.
If the dispute is not resolved through the ADR process, the department may
later take a charge if the Charging Party wishes to pursue the matter. A
charge can be accepted WITHIN ONE YEAR FROM THE DATE OF THE PRACTICE WHICH IS
ALLEGED TO BE DISCRIMINATORY. The department will not take any further action
unless the Charging Party requests that a charge be filed.
