A. DIVERSITY AWARENESS AWARD \l;)kiwA``
One application has arrived. , Gail suggested mention of the award
winner in the next Maplewood' Review and discussed possibilities
for its cover. January 15, 1992, was confirmed as the date of the
Diversity Awareness Award ceremony. Karla will write an article
inviting the public to this ceremony, which will appear in this
issue of the Maplewood Review. James stated that Dr. Rosa Smith
is set to be the keynote speaker. Karla reviewed the agenda for
the award ceremony, which includes opening remarks from the Mayor.
Karla will present the award.
We discussed our contacts with the schools. We will select the
award winner at the next meeting. Dawn showed an article which
she submitted to the Maplewood Review regarding the award.
B. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD
Gail said that April 23, 1992, is the East Metro meeting of the
Chamber of Commerce. This would be the most appropriate area for
the presentation of the Commission's Human Rights Award.
Application information will appear in the February issue of the
Maplewoodeview. At the December meeting of the Commission, we
will review and possibly revise the criteria for the award.

A. JOINT COALITION OF HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONS
Karla mentioned how some of the other commissions are working
jointly on various issues and programs. She suggested that
Maplewood might join with surrounding communities, such as
Oakdale, Woodbury, and North St. Paul ; however, these areas don't
have Human Rights Commissions.
It was discussed whether to extend invitations to our programs by
contacting mayors and council members. Publicity can at least be
done via the Lillie Newspapers for communities besides Maplewood;
we discussed inviting the public from surrounding communities to
Maplewood's Human Rights Day, in particular.
B. CITY OF MAPLEWOOD
Gail said that two applications have been received so far for the
vacancy on the Commission. Applicants will be invited to meet
with the Commission at the December meeting.
