HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/03/1975 MHRC Minutes - Business Meeting June 3 , 197 Present : Kampf, Banks , Malley , Lowery , Ashworth , Mahmood , Larsen , Grant , Vanderpoel General Business Minutes of May 5 , 1975 : Secretary had not had the time to put them in proper order ; requested additional time for rewrite ; granted ! Will be mailed to Don Ashworth along with minutes of this meeting for the usual distribution . State Board : New Chairperson for State Board of Human Rights --Earl Craig . There are three citizen and two attorney vacancies . . . are any of . us interested? SPECIAL NOTE: No meeting in July . . . next MHRC meeting August 12 . Don Ashworth HRA : Has gone thru incorporation procedure . Looking at various types of funding . Planning a session with Council in the near future to talk about where the Authority should be going to insure it will meet with Council approval . Members would like to tour Givens project . Mrs . Givens will conduct such a tour on June 18th . Budget : Certification of City budget not till October but figure work should be started now . Don will have proposed budget ready for commission review at the August meeting . i•tain item of discussion . . future goals and objectives Commission can be active or reactive . . . we must chose which way to go . We do not want to "create " problems . . . must chose direction . Secretary asked to obtain Annual Reports of other Commissions as we need to explore and research what they are doing . Tossed around : --Should we concentrate our energy on a community social services program? Is there an actual need for social services in our community? Is there sufficient cooperation between the City and the School District so social service's could be housed in Gladstone School , for instance . --Teachers are unhappy with the compulsory human rights certification ; should we check into that? --Girls athletic programs vs boys with an eye to funding discri mination ? -more- 2-MNRC June 3 , 1975 . -What about AAP within the School District? What positive steps have been taken to implement if any? How many minorities are employed? Has anyone been assigned the responsibility for AAP in the school district? Is there a viable HR Commission in the school district? Does the school administration see any problems in the area of human relations ? How is the sensitivity training required by law received? What is being done to review the curriculum? What about the status of Tony Buhl ' s survey . . . where does " it" gg from here? Attitudes toward "certification " ? The HRC , administration and educators of district 622 will be con- tacted by Janet Grant; ditto 623 by Janet Kampf . Joe Banks will contact the HRA of the MEA to get their feelings. They will bring a report to the August meeting and we will decide if the Commission should make AAP, certification and other related matters in the school district a major concern for the next Commission year .
