HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/30/1968 April 30, 1968 Pursuant to a letter, sent to most of the Village organizations, asking for their — assistance in staffing Maplewood's Human Rights Commission, the meeting was opened at 7:40 P.M. Council members present were Mayor Axdahl, Councilmen Bergstrom, Holm and Joyce. A preliminary discussion centered on how the Commission members should be chosen. Qualifications, representation from all geographical areas as well as all groups such as religious, business, nationalities, minority groups, economic groups, etc. were also discussed. Mrs. Betty Howard, Field Representative from the State Department of Human Rights added some suggestions with regard to qualifications. Dave Wold moved that a nominating committee of 9 be selected to report within 30 days with a list of 20 names from which the Council would select 15 members for the Commission. Seconded by Dick Dechert Bob Handschin moved to amend committee to 15. Dave Wold and Dick Dechert agreed to the change Steve Head moved to amend, adding a provision that a quorum for this committee be 10 persons. Seconded by Kirsten Wold. The amendment carried. The amended motion also carried Discussion continued on the relationship of this Cpmmission to the State Commission, that of a partnership. The advisability of including teen agers on the nominating committee or the possibility of adding a sub committee for youth on the permanent commission was also discussed. It was the concensus of the group that one's service on the nominating committee should be no bar to his eligibility to serve on the Village's Commissions. The selection of nominating committee members by precincts was also discussed. It was moved and seconded that nominations be made from the floor before nominations from precincts. Motion was tabled. A poll of precincts showed that all were represented. Caucuses were held by precinct for the purpose of selecting nominees to this nominating committee. Names proposed by the precinct groups are: Precinct 1 - Dwight Jessup Precinct 4 - Mrs. Jerry Moe Precinct 2 - Dave Wold Precinct 5 - Louis Haak Ron O'Neal Precinct 3 - Martin Mosio James Tucker Rev. Paul Youngdahl Lucille Bryant Chief Richard Schaller Clarence Harris - 1 - 4-30 Precinct 6 - William Tysseling Precinct 8 - Sister Donald Corcoran Lorraine Fisher Precinct 7 - Father Ryan Cleveland Ray Precinct 9 - Peter Vanderpoel Robert Green Precinct 10 - David Perrizo The meeting was opened for further nominations from the floor. Persons nominated were: Jim Bransford Rev. Eldon Johnson Amos Haynes Nora Eastman Charles Wold Byron Holm Jim Bothwell Moved and seconded that nominations be closed - carried. Steve Head moved that the previous motion limiting the nominating committee to 15 members with a 10 member quorum be revised to be a 26 member committee with a quorum of 15 members. Seconded and carried. Moved and seconded that the nominating committee remain and pick its own chairman and meeting time. Meeting adjourned at 9:20 P.M. The nominating committee met and chose as Co-Chairmen Dave Wold and Amos Haynes. The time for the next meeting is 7:30 P.M. on May 7, 1968 in the Village Hall.
