Maplewood is suing the owner of a problem property after he backed out of a deal to
sell his land to the city.
Gilbert Mancheski was prepared to sell his home at 2494 Harvester Ave. and leave the
city until he realized he would only get $6,000 ratherthan the entire $150,000 from the
sale. He found out his mother had a mortgage lien on the property that woud be paid
fi rst.

"I'll take nothing before I take ($6,000). I'm willing to donate that house; I don't care,"
Mancheski said. "I've already lost everything, I've got nothing else to lose. I never
wanted to move from the get-go. I'm just going to make (expletive) difficult for all of
them."
Neighbors have said Mancheski has pagued his neighborhood for more than 20 years.
After hundreds of police and fire calls to the address and dozens of code violations,
IinlrYslli ir' .sV his house to the city for $150,000 in March.
The purchase agreement required Mancheski to relocate outside Maplewood and
neverto return.
But when it came time to close, Mancheski didn't show up. The city tried to arrange an
alternate closing date, but Mancheski was no longer interested in selling.
Now, the city is following through on its tnir a uirsu 1 ckiain against
Mancheski. City officials previously said they tried everything they could to appease
the situation in a simpler way. Buying the house and suing were both last-resort
options.
Mancheski is working to hire an attorney.
"I'm probably going to end up fighting them on it for as long as I can hang," Mancheski
said. "I'm still there. I've got it all cleaned up, and I don't think I've been getting any
complaints, except a Maplewood cop creeping around at midnight with a flashlight
looking for anything he can."
