My husband and I were just 23, no insurance and both worked jobs. We knew we were going to have to pay the whole deal. We had saved just $500. So we had a midwife, and planed for a 24 hour stay if we could. Well our son came, and the nurses knew our situation, they came in with gift bags and a diaper bag stocked full of formula, diapers, and many other baby necessities we would need. Also they had us go to the rooftop for a steak dinner! We checked out in the morning just 27 hours after our arrival, and our bill was $525. We were at the cash office with my father-inlaw. I took my money out, and said, well, I guess we just will have to pay $25 next week. My father in law smiled, took a check out of his pocket and said, here you go, you and my son saved that money the last nine months and you’re going to need every penny of it. He paid the whole bill and said, “now let’s get my first grandchild home ’cause it’s the best day of my life and the best $525 I ever spent! So in light of the hospital closing its maternity ward, I hope that this story gets back to some of the nicest staff that sure made our first-born experience a lovely memory! Thank you to all of them! Such a nice hospital and staff Carole Hartman, St. Paul Sainted A big thank you to the B-Dale Club and its volunteers. Their BBQ contest was the best I have been to in a while. Great food, fun event and even the Vulcans were there. It takes a whole village of people to run this contest and I have to thank them all. I can’t wait for next year. Beth Salzl, Roseville Tainted Tainted: The person or persons who stole a beautiful dove glass (stained) from St. Joseph’s cemetery in North Branch. The love, work and cost are something! The artist is heartbroken. She is such a good person and has gone through cancer twice. Please return it to St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in North Branch. Addie Meyers, Maplewood Sainted On July 23, I attended a stage show at the Bruentrup Farm sponsored by the Maplewood Historical Society — “Looney Lutherans” in “Livin’ La Vida Lutheran.” It was 75 minutes of continued laughter, with a lot of audience participation. If laughter is healthy, we must have been the healthiest group in Maplewood. Lunch was available — included were some of the Lutherans’ favorites: hot dish, meatballs, Jell-O, egg coffee. Thanks to the historical society and all the volunteers — you made our day! Let’s do it again! D. Waska, Inver Grove Heights
