HomeMy WebLinkAbout11/01/1994 MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION Meeting Minutes of November 1, 1994 Present at Meeting: Marie Koehler, Mike McGuire, Gordon Heininger, Sherrie Le, Shelly Strauss, Gail Schiff, Pat Williamson, Karla Sand. Carol Cude was excused do to illness. I. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by Marie Koehler. II. Agenda approved. III. Minutes approved as amended. Under Present at meeting, Williams was corrected to Williamson. Under VI. New Business A. out was changed to our. IV. Old Business A. Speakers update. Pat reported Robert Terry could possibly be a speaker at the City of Maplewood open house. Robert Terry is a past lecturer from the Humphrey Institute. Marie asked Commission members to think of possible speakers to lecture at the next open house. Karla suggested we bring in a speaker such as Robert Terry and offer CEU's for residents of Maplewood whN—professional development requires EU's. B. Recruitment update. Our advertisement recruiting new members for the Commission made the cut off date for the next issue of the Maplewood In Motion. Gail suggested that we send a copy of the announcement to the state councils representing protected group members. She will fax the names of the agency directors and mailing addresses to Sherrie. C. Progress reports. Marie is continuing her work on creating a mailing list of fraternal organizations located in the City of Maplewood. D. Follow-up on school contacts. Commission members each reported on the contacts they have had with schools, regarding the Diversity Awareness Award and Diversity Awareness Poster Contest. Carver - Yes, received information; asked for second copy. Maplewood - Requested second copy of information. John Glenn - Gordy met with princi and provided information. Edgerton - Gordy met with princi and provided information. Weaver - Pat talked with Donna Richter Gethsemane - Not interested Capital City - Yes, received information Mounds - Won last years contest, may do poster contest only. Beaver - No contact Presentation - Yes, received information St. Jeromes - Yes, received information Hill Murray - Marie will call Carol to see if she was able to contact. Transfiguration - Marie will call Carol to see if she was able to contact. E. Hate Crime response. Handouts included The League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions "Resolution On Combating Hate Crimes", Roseville Human Rights Commission Bias Hate Crime Response, and a "Response to Bias Hate Crime Guide." Discussion followed re: occurrence of a hate crime and who identifies it as a hate crime. Marie will re-type sample letters. Gail will get a copy of the hate crime legislation. V. New Business A. HRC introduction letter. The Commission discussed developing a letter of introduction that could be sent to businesses, etc. that introduces who we are and what we do. B. Housing discrimination complaint. Karla and Gordon gave a brief summary of a housing discrimination complaint that they have been asked to investigate. They will follow-up at the next meeting. C. North St. Paul HRC. The City of North St. Paul has contacted Sherrie seeking information regarding setting up a Human Rights Commission. Sherrie referred them to Marie. Oakdale Human Relations Commission has requested someone from Maplewood Human Relations Commission speak at their November 15 meeting. The contact person is Peggy Hahn, 739-5806. Karla and Gordon will contact them. VI. Other Business VII. Reports A. League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission. Pat talked about the League sponsoring mediation training. The training will be held at Roseville City Hall, November 5, 6, 12, and 13. Gail will attend the training sessions. The League's next meeting will be Saturday, November 19. The meeting will be held in the Maplewood City Council Chambers. Pat requested that we approve the cost of refreshments over and above what the League approves. Motion for approval, second by Gordy. St. Paul Human Rights is working on a city-wide " rejudice isn't welcome here" campaign. ,Y+ , `�`� . introducing addendum to the Hate Crimes Bill,),the,, he 1995 Human Rights conference held in Rochester, 1996 will be the Leagues 25th anniversary. Update on the rights of HIV or Aids infected people in the work force. The League received grant money, $20,000 from the McKnight Foundation and $20,000 from the Bremer Foundation. B. City of Maplewood. Karla asked how other cities, i.e. Cottage Grove, received money (for law enforcement) when the crime bill passed. Maplewood did not receive money because it was not requested. The money available per city is a small amount and could possible employ one police officer for only one year. The City would likely have to come up with money to fund the position thereafter unless a vacancy happened to occur. C. Grievances. Nothing to report. D. Agenda items for next meeting. - Ask Chief Collins to attend our next meeting. Karla will contact Chief Collins. - Finish introduction letter - Update on housing discrimination complaint - Feedback on mediation training from Gail - Finish hate crime response VIII.
